Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Who's the oldest cisco employee still around?

I'm in my mid 50s, so I expect to become extinct this year.

Anyone here in their 60s?

now that is harsh given that much heads-up ;-)

I had a company announce it was going to close a "Center of Excellence" and move the work to another state, but not move the workers. They told us in Oct of the shutdown, and the final lay-offs would occur in Sept of the following year. Yes, that's 11 months of knowing when your job was ending.

Dang - I quit after last August's layoff, after I found I was disappointed that I hadn't been "impacted". Was miserable in my job, and disenchanted with the company. Took my September bonus and PTO payouts and have never been happier. Miss some people and the benefits, but if we manage our money carefully, we're bridged to be able to make it to 65, and thereafter use IRAs and Canadian RSPs in retirement.

Note to people under 40: save save save...

I knew a guy that was 67, though he didn't look like he was that old. When the early retirement package came in 2011? he took the money and ran. Dropped about 200K plus into his retirement account. Know it doesn't apply to now but he was a great guy and I am glad it worked out for him.

I was LR'd months after turning 50. The increase in balance sheet funding, luckily fed over 1,000 hungry executive offsite business travelers the finest cuts of aged prime rib and award-winning vinyard wines.

Make sure to ask for outplacement when they LR you. Check if they will help you transition to owning a small business..
