Half can't pass the drug and/or background check.
The other half get hired, work long enough to go through the training period, then drop off the face of the earth, never to be heard from again.
The ones that do stay have no business around customers. They are always on their phone or always in huddles talking among other workers. That's if they show up and don't pull a no call no show or call out because "my birthday is today"...yeah, that REALLY happened.
I have another employee that is oblivious to the growing lines at the CAC. She goes on about her life to the customers, talks about her latest argument with her boyfriend, even proudly announced that she is on welfare. I've told her to keep her personal life personal but to no avail. It's embarrassing.
Hell, some are so brazen that they will tell a customer to their face that they "don't want to check them out" and "would rather keep folding clothes". I overheard that today and promptly sent her home, that is before I asked her why she was working here. Her response: "it looked slow around here, so I applied. I don't like it when I have to deal with people the whole time". I interviewed her...she LIED and pretended to be all about CUSTOMER SERVICE on the interview! GEESH!!!!!!
Unfortunately, she will return (probably when she feels like it, not when she's scheduled). Our DM is reluctant to have us terminate anyone. Just imagine this. We have three or four associates well past the six attendance points before termination, yet they are still here. It has something to do with some turnover metric tied to the scorecard. I guess that's more important than holding out for quality associates.
Our turnover suffers regardless because we are getting these sloths that are afraid to work a little, but then the DM wants us to hire QUICKLY! Don't be too choosy! If they pass the drug and background check, basically we "have" to hire them instead of holding out for someone better and more qualified.
The issue is that most of the positions we hired for are minimum wage and average less than 15 hours a week. So, maybe, the bottom of the barrel is all we will get?
