Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Should I try to negotiate a bit better severance package?

Let's say, they let me go and offer X as a severance package. Would it be possible to negotiate a package that's X+Y where Y is a number greater than zero. Any help would be appreciated.

The only leverage you possibly have is if T wants you to sign an agreement that binds you to do or not do something when you leave. That is technically a contract that can be negotiated. But the reality is that Randy will toss you to the curb in a heartbeat if you raise any objections or try to negotiate, it sets a bad precedent.

They let you go, as in they fire you or they lay you off?

If it is a layoff situation, you have absolutely no leverage. You will simply get what the business case allows for. You can not sign the waiver and pursue a case in the legal system, but you won't get the severance package.

If they are trying to fire you, rather than go the distance and document you for many months, they might be willing to negotiate a bit of a deal. Wouldn't expect anything great, but could be better than just walking out the door on your own.

I guess you can try, but you're going to be told to take it or leave it. You're being "surplused". They are giving you the severance due to policy. You aren't going to get anything beyond what policy says you're getting.
