Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

Writing on the walls for PHCs

After the recent mass layoffs for PHCs, Humana is now hiring for RNs. I feel that the writing is on the wall that PHCs will be released and our positions given to RNs.

The reason they are hiring RNs is due to the attrition of the RNs. They are quitting, many teams have lost or will have lost 1/2 their nurses. I don't think you need to worry, it won't be easy for then to rehire that many RNs. Nurses have their nursing networks in the cities, the word is out in the nursing community that nurses are jumping ship because of the long hours, stress and micro-management. I know many nurses who are physically ill, they can't afford the medical care so they aren't getting medical treatment. I have heard some cry, some have said they are on the verge of breakdown. Nurses are making calls and then charting for hours after dinner. Management is pushing nurses to work these hours without pay, they have done the math. The goal is for 50% of your time should be on the phone which would be average of 4 hours a day, then add meetings, plus 5 hrs to chart, somehow that isn't 8 hrs. Charting takes so long because you have to put in at least two, sometimes 4 or 5 care plans because the new person the nurse received is a mess from previous HCM, plus multiple medications, surveys and more. Charting averages about 30 minutes each contact. Given you need to contact a minimum of 10 people, charting alone takes 5 hours, plus 4-5 hours talk time, plus meetings. So how does that add up to 8 hours, it doesn't. Nurses do not get paid hourly so if you work 10 hr days (some work 12 hrs) Humana gets a lot of time free. DO NOT WORRY PHCs.

One problem is that CMS has actual requirements about members being managed by licensed personnel, particularly SNP members. Humana has largely chosen to ignore this to save money. They are also failing at the "interdisciplinary " portion. Nurses and social workers are not interchangeable. These members are not managed, they are not being offered the services the government is reimbursing Humana to do, and everyone's job is danger if this line of business is dismantled.

I believe that a lot of HCM'S are leaving but the only way I am judging that is based on what I have read here about how poorly they are treated. God knows an RN could walk out and be hired elsewhere the same day. As a PHC we don't exactly have the same demand for our skills so a lot of us are stuck like chuck until we secure another job. My point being that yes you could be right. I don't feel secure here at all. But it might just be that we are having so many HCM'S quitting. Not enough evidence that I am going to lose sleep over it.

Saw this posted previously ...maybe this will apply to PHCs also

I guess that's why the rumor has started that HCM RNs are not going to be laid off. Everyone has quit. We are income generators for the company so maybe management is getting a little concerned.....maybe. The only advantage to this job is that you get to work at home. The pay is less than working in the hospital and instead of working three days a week you work five days a week usually 10 hours a day . Wow that sounds like a dream job to me !

On SNP side they laid off the HCC and that is the same role as the PHC and the MSW are HCC now. I thought they were going to do same thing on the HCCP said.

As an HCM RN I feel like you are correct. Last year we had monthly roster clean ups to send members to phc that didn't need hcmrn, we haven't had one yet this year now. All the new members they are enrolling, most don't need hcmrn. Of course, most have refused service period too and we are being told to continue to call them no mater what, but that's another story.

I heard they posted a role to hire PHC's in Cincinnati in early March. Not sure if it internal only or not. I can't figure out what is going on. I heard that Humana makes it standard practice to lay people off to increase productivity, and they rotate the effected department each year. Sounds pretty sadistic and short sighted. I will feel more confident in my role at HUmana when they start listening more, stop raising metrics and find ways for smarter not harder, and implement cost of living + merit based raises. We need to shown we have value to Humana and that Humana's interest in associate Wellbeing is not just lip service.
