Thread regarding Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) layoffs

Military Veterans “Out There”, Hello? HPE Culture is Hostile to Vets…

I think we all know by now that HPE discriminates against older folks. See http://hpagediscriminationinvestigation.com/ and supporting links there… I will leave it at that.

What is clearly less-often commented on, is that HPE culture is fundamentally hostile to military veterans. I don’t think that this is legally actionable at all… It is too “fluffy”, soft, and vaguely culturally defined. I don’t think that it’s even conscious, from Meg and On High, like the age discrimination thing is… The anti-military-vet bias is unconscious. But trust me, it is VERY MUCH there!

Now, I am frankly surprised that it’s still out there, at “Glassdoor”, what with Glassdoor’s propensity to take down reviews that are critical of the employers that advertise jobs on Glassdoor… Glassdoor “knows which side of the bread that their butter is on”, if you will. But if you want the LONG version of what I will shortly summarize, then see "HP’s Work Culture is Fundamentally Hostile to the Very Best Values of Veterans of the USA’s Armed Services" at https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-Hewlett-Packard-RVW8892343.htm ...

So the brief preview-summary is, this is hardy legally actionable… It’s too “fluffy”. You’re a veteran, and HPE has already “thanked you for your service” by laying you off? So as to make more room for H-1B indentured servants? Welcome to the club! Sorry to say, there’s little chance of legal recourse for you… Move along, now… This is more-so, a warning to currently-employed-at-HPE military veterans.

OK then, to the heart of the matter: In the military, you learned teamwork. We literally worked together, or we died together. And there was the “hazing” thing, where they yelled at us, with the drill instructor’s spittle flying in our face, from inches away. We had to OBEY, and put the good of the team at the TOP of the list! No whiners, crybabies, or egotistical “prima donnas” were allowed! Those types of folks MUST be driven out of the military, and other dangerous professions (police, firefighters, oil-field roughnecks), where teamwork is a life-and-death matter.

From time to time, we read of people crippled (or even killed, God forbid) in “hazing” incidents, in marching bands, college frats, etc. … In organizations where such “hazing” or “driving out the egotists” has no real place, at all!

Well, here is your summary: In the military, anti-egotist “hazing” had its place… As did, a firm respect for your superiors in rank, and in seniority in the work unit.

At HPE? If the “hazing” lasts for more than, I would say, 3 months… This is an arbitrary time figure… Do NOT*, any longer, merely figure that your co-workers are merely “testing” you, to drive out the egotists! Under the dog-eat-dog spirit resulting from HPE’s “forced distribution” performance reviews, your co-workers are sabotaging you, setting you up to be laid off! Instead of them! The teamwork you learned in the military? It will HURT you, at HPE! If you as a military vet can stand to invert your finest values… Then the only way to survive at HPE, is to constantly cover your own backside, instead of covering the backsides of your co-workers! You MUST** document these kinds of things when they happen, and report them to your supervisor… And then cross your fingers, and hope that your supervisor actually has a clue… If you are to survive the dog-eat-dog battlefield at HPE! (Your enemy is your co-worker, per policies set from Meg and Her Minions On High).

PTSD, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder ; see http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/tc/post-traumatic-stress-disorder--symptoms#1 for example.

As a USA military vet, I was lucky enough to NOT see combat. I did lose military friends and acquaintances to operational accidents, and one case of suicide. That’s enough traumatic stress for me, thanks!

If you research PTSD, you’ll find that some people are more susceptible to it than others. Details are hazy, except that it is well known that adults are more susceptible to PTSD if they were not treated right as children. So for you parents out there… Here’s another reason why you should NOT abuse your children!

I actually think I felt greater health-threatening stress at HPE than I ever did in the military. At least in the military, we all generally looked out for each other. At HPE, I witnessed (and was often subjected to) every form of office-politics back-stabbing that I have ever heard of. The most disgusting thing about it? That fact that some of the worst offenders were nominally, outwardly, devout followers of a certain belief system that is quite prevalent in the USA. To my understanding, a fundamental precept of this belief system is to “treat others the way we’d like to be treated”. Can you say, “Hypocrisy”?

I was left feeling resentful, angry, and mostly, disgusted. But I am recovering nicely, thanks! I often remind myself of a simple truth… Any way you care to slice and dice the humans… Other than sorting them into good and evil, with God-like insight… You are going to have your good, bad, and indifferent apples, in every barrel.

-q1c... You sound exactly like the morons that have screwed up a once great company. I picture you to be an arrogant asshat full of themselves and one of those proficient at the games played in the office.

Yup-yup yo, and a bottle of rum!

In my organization, we see all the usual things… Stealing the credit for the work of others, constantly telling the boss how much smarter we are (how much harder the things are, that WE do) than the other guy, etc. Old and boring stuff…

But the best “gotcha game” is subtle, and not so well known, and it is the “circular logic loop”. It is VERY effective when deployed against “newbies” in the group! All it takes, is seniority in the group, and enough (often technical) buzzwords to make yourself look plausible. Simply insist that “newbie” must triple-prove any new work that “newbie” does, because after all, he/she IS a newbie, and is kinda slow, therefor clearly not to be totally trusted. Not like me; I’ve been around a while, so I can merely single-prove or half-prove my work, and go on. … Now newbie, having to ALWAYS triple-prove newbie’s work, will CONTINUE to be slow! So newbie NEVER gets any real credibility, for always being slow, so… Will always continue to need to triple-prove his/her work! And thereby be slow; continue to N + 1 till newbie needs to be laid off and replaced, and then you can do it to the next newbie!

Someone forgot their meds today! Thanks for your service (I'm a vet too). "Older" employees are shown the door cause they fail to keep up with the latest technologies and stay sharp. Companies refuse to pay someone to click buttons and watch lights. Automate all the things!

The responders are RIGHTON unfortunately. That’s par for the course Chief. The good this company ever did for me while I was in the military was grant me time off with NO PAY to perform my Temp Duty stints. Corporations and/or most people not all people in general have no idea what the military is or what it does for them. The fine men and women who made this company great are gone now. What is left are the wrong type of people , politicians, backstabbers, slackers and unfocused 3rd world bozo's Move on. We now have the freedom to speak on this and other boards without becoming blackballed. If only the stockholders knew. Use your military discipline, experience and training to find the job YOU WANT. This company is clueless. WFR was the best thing that happened to me free pay, benefits and freedom to do what I WANT to do. I was pushed off the gangplank and left for dead last Oct by Granny and her useless management team. Now that I am free Monday’s became the best day of the week. It signals the beginning of five days of peace and quiet... The gym, restaurants, stores, everything are less busy. I feel like an unmarried guy whose friends keep pushing jobs at me, I am busier more than ever. My family relationships are mucho better, no stress, I am learning and growing more than ever. I can’t go back to work now. I’ve since eased into my NEW normal life and I love it. Stress is gone and my health improved dramatically I am up at 5am and in bed by 9pm and sleep like a kitten meow. 5am Monday’s are now my best time of the day. Thank you HPE, DXC, HPQ, CSC, CSRA whatever the hell they want to call themselves now. If you still want to work Good Luck. Just make enough so it won’t tax or stress you to an early grave. Most people left at HPE or DXC want to work until they drop I only worked to live a financial life not live to work. They don’t understand until something serious knocks em down really hard.

"Military doesn't have anything to do with it. HPE is hostile to all the inventory."

Thanks for your thoughts, and I do agree. Military vets, though, if they have absorbed the vitally-essential-in-the-military "teamwork" ethic... (as most of them have)... Are in for a very rude shock at HPE, with HPE's dog-eat-dog culture imbued by decades of a foolish "rank and yank" schemes. Military vets must essentially invert their finest ethical qualities, in order to stay at HPE. Military vets be warned!!!

If the above rant was indicative of your quality of work, it is clear your military service had nothing to do with why you were shown the door.
