What's a midpoint for grade 8 software engineer in San Jose?

I think my manager is lying to me, when he says that I'm already close to the upper range of pay for my grade. If I ask him about my CR, and from the number he gives my and my base salary I calculate where the midpoint would be, it gives a theoretical midpoint at slightly above 80k.

Can someone at grade 8 do the same calculation and confirm? Or any manager here?

LeftIn2015 is correct for fy16. You're being lied to. Bottom is 85% of mid, top is 115%.

In FY15 the midpoint for a SJ grade 8 was 108,000 with Total Target Comp midpoint at $121,000

Grade 10 midpoint $134,000, TTC midpoint $154,000

Outside of SJ, grade 8 midpoint was $95,000, TTC midpoint $106,000

Grade 10 midpoint $117,000, TTC midpoint $135,000

Probably add 3-5% annual adjustment to the ranges, but I left in 2015 so don't know this for sure.

6eki - good post.

"The reasoning is there wont be any hike for coming 3-4 years for those new grads. Even if they become grade8, they may only get a marginal hike."

Another reason those same grads will have left in 2 yrs anyway.

@2yua I did not make 117k because I left before the hikes happened. But all friends got a massive hike to 117K. Last year and this year, Cisco hired fresh grads at 117k average. You can call bs on my numbers, but that doesn't make them false.

9 years at Cisco? University hires without a role or any responsibilities receive a higher salary.

9 years at Cisco RTP. Hired at grade 8 NCE and promoted from 8-10-11. I was hired at $85k and now stuck at 120k for few years. I think I am not even at the higher end of grade 10.

@3zri: Its no wonder the H1B thing has become such a cluster. All makes sense now.

Seems like if the H1B pipeline closes up, the next step for Cisco will be to shift all the new hires and workforce gear-ups to places like RTP. Lots of great colleges on the east coast, and the RTP cost of living is 35% less than SJ.

@2yua $117K for new college grad in SJ is very believable. I posted more than 6 months ago about the massive inflation in salaries for new college grads. In almost all cases college hires from the past 1-3 years are making more than people hired 4-7 years ago. The reason is that people hired 4-7 years ago where hired during a slump in the tech job market and so salaries were lower. Now the competition is insane.

Before I was so unceremoniously tossed to the wayside by Cisco, I had a new college hire come on-board making more than 2 members of my team with 5+ years of experience in RTP. This college hire turned down a job at VMWare for over $120K. This person took the lower pay at Cisco as once the cost of living was factored in the Cisco offer in RTP was better.

Grade level and experience have little impact on salary. Cisco is a relationship-driven company, merely kiss some a-- and watch the salary rise. Directors/managers manipulate the pay grade system to reward their friends.

Plenty of people with no show jobs, collecting rather large salaries due to who they know. Salary transparency at Cisco would cause a small riot.

Run!!!

He is definitely lying if he came up with those numbers. If he is lying about your compensation, he may lie/or already lying about lot of things.

I was a grade6 in San Jose with 103K in 2016 and left. All my friends who joined along with me at 103k got their salaries hiked to 117k in late 2016.

So I would assume, midpoint for grade8 right now is around 115-120.

When I confronted my manager, he was very honest with the numbers and said I was being underpaid. He was new to Cisco. So, he was probably naive. But, when I confronted my second level manager, he outright rejected those numbers and said my manager was lying to me.

I don't know if the median, or even the ranges differ between SJC and RTP as I never saw any info for SJC as I was in RTP. But you can assume there was one due to the higher cost of living there. One of my co-workers transferred from SJC to RTP and claimed that he kept his SJC pay grade and salary which, combined with selling a home there and buying here, made him much better off than his peers.

Back in '08, the median for a PG 9 IT Engineer was $94,500 in RTP. In '14, I changed teams and dropped to a PG 8, but actually got a pay increase so I know I was being paid above the median, so I can't speak to PG 8 software engineers.

I'd say $80K is low for the median.

A bit of googling suggests the average Engineer II at Cisco in SJ is getting a bit over $73K and the average Engineer I across all companies in SJ is pulling in more than $2K more.

Cisco isn't nearly as bad as other companies which have a spreadsheet with "college" on one axis and "years sitting in cubicle" on the other and the salary at the intersection. In general, even good companies only use contribution to slightly alter the slope of your salary increases and for most people real money only occurs through job jumps, particularly early in your career. As many can tell you, getting laid off in bad economic times later in your career can set you back so far you'll never get back to the salary you had at that layoff, so it's best to bank both skills and money along the way.

It depends on your region but the mid-point in CA was $85K back in 2000; seventeen years ago

HR policy is that you are entitled to the range for your grade and the one above. If he/she will not give you the range look on the HR website or open a case. It is not confidential information.
