Stores in our area and holding hiring Blitzes. Why? If we are supposed to be getting laid off, what would they do this for? Just more severance to pay.....

I'm work for Sears not AT&T but it's the same. People getting laid off left & right. Hours reduced for those left. Many of the folks are minimum wage earners who meet required (crazy high) company metrics. They are also part time with no benefits so there is no savings like when you shed full-timers. So not loser slackers -- who somehow manage to stay employed.
But Sears keeps hiring NEW people even now after the holidays. There are signs up, online postings & little tables with applications at the store entrances. Make no sense whatsoever.
I don't believe there will be severance for any part timers so that's out of the equation. But it mystifies me still.
Is it to throw people off... hire people to replace those leaving/getting fired (they won't have pensions like some folks do, won't have much serverance pay and will be more willing to do authorized retail work) or maybe CEO promised President Trump some jobs... got to make it look good so he will let the time warner deal go through!!!
