Thread regarding Sears layoffs

glad I won't be there to take up the slack for the same pay. Sorry for those left. Kmart Zombies have so much sorrow ahead.

I got 8 weeks severance pay and a new lease on life. It is good.

George Bailey(It's A Wonderful Life) said "I know what I'm gonna do tomorrow and the next day and the next year and the year after that. I'm shaking the dust of this crummy little town off my feet and I'm gonna see the world." That's what I have to say about Kmart.

Yes, the first poster represents the evil/bullying we see daily at Sears from our executives (maybe it's Eddie) no need to bring it here when people are just looking for help, show some support or just set up a separate comment to air your frustrations, don't take it out on others.

Yes, and wasn't it a shame that the first poster was so nasty by stating that the OP had no initiative and "got fired"....so uncalled for

And this whole thread was started with a quote from "Its a Wonderful Life" is that irony?

@1jkt - What are you talking about? Most managers, supervisors, department heads and HR personnel don't "have a company," but they still hire people! You have zero idea who 1vqe is; they could "have" ten companies for all you know. I would say you're the one that "ain't got nothing to offer nobody dog."

1Vqe- you'd hire someone who'd been laid off. Really? You'd have to have a company to hire someone in the first place. Chances are you are just another bitter Kmart minimum wage slave. Trying to take the moral high ground- you ain't got nothing to offer nobody dog.

The MAJOR and USUALLY ONLY test ............

Did you get a severance AND/OR are able to collect unemployment compensation?

If the answer is "YES" you were laid off.

If you were able to "cut" a political firing deal to include a severance and/or unemployment compensation collection you can also claim "layoff"

isclaimer: depending upon your State rules re: unemployment comp --- You don't get severance or can't collect unemployment comp then you were F'ing FIRED

Of course there is a difference between a layoff and a firing. Here is a good way to see the difference answer these 2 questions to yourself.

  1. Did you get a severance or unemployment? If the answer is yes, you were laid off. (Although, I do not know the rules for part timers and nor do I care to know)

2.When you apply for a new job will you state in the interview that you were fired or laid off? If you answer laid off it is because you KNOW that it is the better answer and you understand the difference between the two. If your answer is you were fired than you're a pin head and probably won't get the job.

That is a ridiculous statement and one that just makes an argument go around in circles. We all know that if a manager is s-xually harassing an employee, that's morally, ethically AND illegally wrong, if an employee is watching tv while on the clock in an office instead of working that is morally wrong, etc etc. We can go on and on and people can argue in circles whether watching tv while on the clock instead of working is morally wrong. But I think most reasonable people get the point and most reasonable people know right from wrong. If you get fired, there was a problem and companies do not want to hire a problem. They do not care what the details are or who was MORE right than the other, they just care that there was trouble and with many other candidates for a job why take the chance. A person who was laid off is a different story. Their job was cut due to a re-org or financial troubles, whatever.

If you are unsure as to the difference of a lay off versus firing than I'm sure you can study it on the internet. Personally, I'm not hiring someone that was fired. I don't need to bring trouble into my business or trouble for my current employees. I WILL however hire someone who has been laid off.

It is a correct statement that these SHLD employees were laid off and not fired. And it is a correct statement that there is a difference. Now if you want to go round in circles chasing your tail, have at it. I'm done.

1wbd- ironic isn't it that companies should determine what is ethically or morally right for employees- who are they to say what's right?

either way-man, it feels so good to be free. I gave so much and have known for a couple of years now that caring about your job had no meaning. Still, I cared and tried because that was my integrity.

It's all so ridiculously, awesomely sad. I'm glad they gave me walking papers with severance pay. It's only gonna get uglier for those left.

A layoff mean a person lost their job by no fault of their own. Being fired means someone was incompetent at their job, unable to get along with people and bosses at their job, made a major mistake in the job or did something morally, ethically or illegally wrong. If I'm hiring a person it makes a huge difference to me if that person was laid off from a company due to the company's own failure versus being fired from their previous job.

Kmart and Sears call these "layoffs" too. But in reality, they never call anyone back to work. They say you can reapply and if you are hired, you start back at minimum wage and a new calendar for benefits like vacations. They only call it a layoff so as to say that it wasn't your fault. Make no mistake, you have been fired. But, with the way this company is headed, that is actually a good thing in the long run.

He didn't get fired, he was laid off. A big difference.

The previous posters on here could be a little more encouraging. If you received 8 weeks severance, you must have been with KMart at least 8 years of your life. Time to see what the next 8 years brings!

There's more to life than KMart and even retail period.
