Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

HCM Layoff Update

My coach was one of the impacted people, she told us privately before she left that HCM's will be laid off in april. Lay offs will be based on metrics she said. They are waiting to see how many people quit on their own as well as letting transitioning to cgx 2.0 be completed to know the number of people they "need" to let go.

The writer below spoke well and I agree wholeheartedly. This is the way business is done in America. Anytime a job is loss for whatever reason it can be devastating to the person on the receiving end. I'm thankful I'm still employed, I love what I do. But I will also continue to build myself up in the event I end up being laid off.

Sadly insurance companies have nothing to do with health CARE, its all about taking Medicare money and shuffling the money through their system, making sure they CEO and shareholders make the most of this game. Members I talk to more and more say their doctors won't take Humana because of the poor and slow reimbursement. Insurance is not care, it is a business, with all that entails. Sugar coat it all they want with lovely phrases like well being and Our Dream, but that is all marketing. Sure, I have a job, and I do appreciate that. I tell myself I am helping the members, but lately, there is less and less to help them with and more and more I talk to angry stressed and heart broken suffering members.

You are correct in that the restructuring of the health care system will lead to dramatic changes in all health care settings. We have just felt the beginning of the changes. This is the “New Age of Health Care” as you put it.

Humana is a business. To even try to make sense of what is going on we have to ask ‘what is the purpose of a business?’ The purpose of a business is an organ of society; the purpose is to create a customer. All businesses have one goal-to make money. To make money you need customers, people who buy the products. It is the customer who determines what a business is or does. If a product a business carries is no longer profitable or meets the needs of consumers, it is discontinued in favor of a new, more inventive product. This appears is what is happening to certain programs at Humana. Humana is hiring nurses for different segments in an attempt to create a new customer base for new products it will begin to offer, in response to the Affordable Health Care act changes that may or may not happen. To be successful in business, you have to stay ahead of the curve. Whatever happens with the ACA, Humana will position itself in the best possible way to make sure it provides innovative products to meet the changing needs of its consumers in new markets. What has happened with SNP/HCCP is a horrible and unfortunate part of business. It happens in every company eventually. SNP was innovative and ahead of the curve 8 years ago, but now, is it the most appropriate program to meet the needs of customers? The customers themselves are changing, their needs are different, and so are their demands. Health care changes rapidly and what was at the forefront of health yesterday, may no longer be appropriate tomorrow.

There is so much going on in health care and in Humana that consumers or front line staff (and even some levels of leadership) will never know about or will never learn about. Humana employs over 50,000 people. It is an enormous company that will be unfazed by the dismantling of SNP and creation of an even bigger, possibly more successful program. Humana is the first company to stop offering ACA plans-what do they know or anticipate to happen? Perhaps we will never know. If there are new programs that will require the use of nurses and other health care disciplines, why are current staff not reeducated for new roles rather than paying severance to lay off, and then have to invest more money into recruiting and retaining new staff? I have no answers to offer for this, and I can’t speculate as to why. Why were wonderful, hard-working, dedicated, well-educated people let go? I have no answers to this either. We have let go of some of the most intelligent people in the nation-nurses with masters degrees in business, nursing and public health. Why? It seems to me that a company would want a solid, well-educated workforce to continue to be an innovative leader in the industry. I can’t offer any reasons as to why we would all be let go. This is something we will unfortunately never know why it happened, it is just a result of doing business in America.

I would not be surprised if, with the restructuring of Health Care that our programs were not reinvented and that we may very well find ourselves at the dawning of the New Age of Health Care and are on the ground floor of a whole new Program Development. I am personally not giving up the ghost yet. I'm not secure and may be hanging on for dear life but I think that we may be on the ground floor of some new form of health care. Hang in there and try not to get discouraged. Be confident that there is always some other place to go if needed but its not over yet.

This is not surprising. Constructive discharge.

One only needs to check the Humana site for employee offerings or Indeed.com to demonstrate that there is NO mass hiring of nurses going on. There are some offerings in Louisiana and Texas which is very short of their call for nurses throughout the US. There is no mass hiring going on.

No matter what, snp or hccp are going to be tortured with unrealistic metrics until something gives in or breaks.
