If you really want to know about layoffs just ask your boss - you'll get a 'no clue answer' and he'll black list you, at least here in Deerfield.

I definitely would try to take vacation time anytime from January to March if possible.
We will be choosing our vacation time next week for 2018. Can I take the first three weeks in January ?
