Thread regarding Sears layoffs

I Quit.

Sorry about the repeat post, not sure why it didn't post my text.

This morning the holiday schedule came out and Sears has me working Thanksgiving night, LOL!! and then all day Friday and Saturday. I don't think so. Since Jan they have scheduled me 5 hours a week. I was able to find another job in March and just continued with the 5 hours weekly because it was easy money and a chance to connect with my Sears friends. Now they want me to drop everything and work their holiday hours???? I have worked for Sears for several years but this year they have treated employees terribly, especially with the reduction of hours. No way am I giving up my holiday season for such few hours and little pay.

So, today I quit. My husband and daughter cheered.

Amen to all of the above posts! It sounds so much like me though that I hope my sm doesn't think it's me posting. Cause I am just trying to play them like they are playing me and I'm pretty sure I can get away with it cause they are so stupid from the ground up. (from the top down is more accurate) It's just human nature that if you are f---ed with enough you give it back. corp ain't strong so they need to see everyday the recoil in the employees they have brought on themselves.

What an incredibly screwed up and sad organization. If they had an ounce of business sense, they should have been trying to get you to work full time. But they drive away their best employees by skimping on a few dollars of payroll.

Be glad you are done and out. It's been a long time coming but Sears Holdings is down to a few months at best.

Great for you. Seriously don't regret what happened the company is coming to a close and every store feels it regardless of what position you are in I can promise you GMs see and feel what's coming it's simply not as easy to get out as just saying it since the rest of the job market doesn't think highly of Sears management. just be happy with the fact that you are now free from the stress and doubts and will get to spend time with your family

I really appreciate the supportive comments. The job just seemed to spiral downward and I don't like to leave on such a sour note. I had called the store manager who has only been at our store for the past 3-4 months and our conversation went like this:

Me: "Hello "George" this is Laura, I'm calling to talk about the schedule. I see that I'm scheduled for Thanksgiving night. I assumed that since I have unavailability for Thursdays and that I'm only scheduled for very few hours that I would be having the holiday off. I have plans on Thanksgiving and will not be able to work."

[Since Jan. I've only been scheduled about 5 hours a week and therefore found another job in March. I asked Sears back in March which 2 days would they like me to leave open for them to schedule me my 5 hours. Sears said to give them 1 weekend day and 1 workday. I gave them Sat and Tues. The rest of the days are marked as unavailable.]

George: "WHAT DID THEY TELL YOU WHEN THEY HIRED YOU ABOUT THE HOLIDAYS?"

Me: "When I was hired back in Oct of 2013 they told me I was a seasonal hire and would have to work the holidays. I agreed, and I worked the holidays. In Jan of 2014 I was called into the manager's office and was told that it was time to let the seasonal employees go, however, the manager had selected a few of us to remain. He offered me a part time position in the shoe department. I accepted and was told that I am now being re-hired as a regular employee and was no longer considered a seasonal employee." (I did still work Thanksgiving in 2014 and 2015 because of the threatened job loss and at that time I was getting about 20-25 hours per week and wanted to keep my job)

George: "Well, you still have to work Thanksgiving."

Me: "For 5 hours a week during the rest of the year, Sears does not get my Thanksgiving."

George: "Well that's not going to work for me."

Me: "W-e-l--l George, working on Thanksgiving isn't going to work for me either. I'll finish up this week and Sat. night will be my last day."

George: "Okay."

Me: "Okay."

And like that it is over. Three years of working at Sears and I have called in sick only 2 times. I came in multiple times when others have called out. I used to be an employee that they counted on to get things done like the truck, inventory, setting the ad etc.. I was dependable and trustworthy. Then they cut the hours in the shoe department and then got rid of the lead position. The lead became a regular full timer and took up 35 hours and me and the other part timer got the left over crumbs which worked out to about 5 hours each. I kept the 5 hours while it worked for me. On Thursday, it no longer worked.

Well, so long Sears. RIP.

the hubris is unbelievable. 5 hours per week all year, and then have you do like 20 hours in 2.5 days over a family holiday? and I assume you don't get overtime for working on a holiday? You live in a state where weed is legal, right???
