I really appreciate the supportive comments. The job just seemed to spiral downward and I don't like to leave on such a sour note. I had called the store manager who has only been at our store for the past 3-4 months and our conversation went like this:
Me: "Hello "George" this is Laura, I'm calling to talk about the schedule. I see that I'm scheduled for Thanksgiving night. I assumed that since I have unavailability for Thursdays and that I'm only scheduled for very few hours that I would be having the holiday off. I have plans on Thanksgiving and will not be able to work."
[Since Jan. I've only been scheduled about 5 hours a week and therefore found another job in March. I asked Sears back in March which 2 days would they like me to leave open for them to schedule me my 5 hours. Sears said to give them 1 weekend day and 1 workday. I gave them Sat and Tues. The rest of the days are marked as unavailable.]
George: "WHAT DID THEY TELL YOU WHEN THEY HIRED YOU ABOUT THE HOLIDAYS?"
Me: "When I was hired back in Oct of 2013 they told me I was a seasonal hire and would have to work the holidays. I agreed, and I worked the holidays. In Jan of 2014 I was called into the manager's office and was told that it was time to let the seasonal employees go, however, the manager had selected a few of us to remain. He offered me a part time position in the shoe department. I accepted and was told that I am now being re-hired as a regular employee and was no longer considered a seasonal employee." (I did still work Thanksgiving in 2014 and 2015 because of the threatened job loss and at that time I was getting about 20-25 hours per week and wanted to keep my job)
George: "Well, you still have to work Thanksgiving."
Me: "For 5 hours a week during the rest of the year, Sears does not get my Thanksgiving."
George: "Well that's not going to work for me."
Me: "W-e-l--l George, working on Thanksgiving isn't going to work for me either. I'll finish up this week and Sat. night will be my last day."
George: "Okay."
Me: "Okay."
And like that it is over. Three years of working at Sears and I have called in sick only 2 times. I came in multiple times when others have called out. I used to be an employee that they counted on to get things done like the truck, inventory, setting the ad etc.. I was dependable and trustworthy. Then they cut the hours in the shoe department and then got rid of the lead position. The lead became a regular full timer and took up 35 hours and me and the other part timer got the left over crumbs which worked out to about 5 hours each. I kept the 5 hours while it worked for me. On Thursday, it no longer worked.
Well, so long Sears. RIP.
