Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

RIFs coming Thursday, 11/17

No surprise that it's coming. If you get cut, be the better person. Maintain your dignity. You're important, smart, and able to move on. You WILL survive! Pray and hold your head high as you step into a new chapter of your book of life. God bless each and every one!

Wasn't laid off this round but was told they are far from done. More to come next year to EUS. The future support model being 2 per call center, 4 for retail, 1 or 2 for HQ. Its a different world, so get your resume updated and be prepared for the inevitable.

This is one of the first comment threads that was so honest and genuine. I was laid off last year. It was tough but a year later it is better. Verizon is imploding.... they have no strategy. Like others have said, walk out with your head high and with dignity. It will get better....

I was laid off around this time last year. A coworker of mine was on his way to a vacation spot and they called him to tell him he was laid off. My manager called me at home at 6 in the morning to deliver the news that I was laid off.

Anyone know which groups in IT specifically? Also, what if you're off tomorrow, do they email you or schedule for Friday?

Thanks I've been through a layoff at another company before. It gets depressing sending resume after resume into a black hole. It can turn into a negative spiral of your escape of choice. Just hang in there, keep on doing what you need to do professionally, take the extra time to focus on your health & spend time with family. In the end, that's all that matters.

I got laid off this time last year .... Now I am on Food Stamps, drained all accounts, bills overdue

and living off loans and temp jobs.... Many IT interviews. no luck... Heard rumors that verizon does not want to see any former employees either as employees or contractors.... Is this true ? I may have to become a trucker and not see family for a month. Thank You Lowell for your wonderful thanksgiving present... We will be on the receiving end of the food pantry and turkey dinner at salvation army this year.. Having fun with all your Indians and H1-Bs' Lowell ?? Good for you.

"GE is going to be closing down 30 of its 34 datacenters" and moving to AWS.

=> https://www.nextplatform.com/2015/10/07/the-aws-machine-turns-your-former-datacenter-into-its-money/ (GE mentioned about 3/4 way down page) ..

not a good trend for IT professionals in the long term .. unless you learn AWS skills

I hope I make it through tomorrow because I am not prepared. But the writing is on the wall for IT, they are aggressively pushing into public cloud (AWS) and want to shut down data centers. IF i make it next year I will take no chances with my future.

Looking back at last year, this day before was horrible. The actual day was not quite as bad as not knowing. Don't think being asked to work the night before is a good sign, don't even think being told you are safe is good. They whacked everyone spring and December 2015, it was merciless. I'm thinking there can't be that many to slam in my spouse's old department as they got almost everyone that built those systems and gave them to rolls eyes and shakes head. Man's inhumanity to man has been going on for a long time at that company. It's true what others are saying, it's not like that everywhere. He has most evenings, nights and weekends back. It has been wonderful, best thing that could have happened other than the company coming back to it's senses and sending the "new" employees home and having adequate American workforce to manage the systems instead of the daily crisis mode it is in all of the time. Do anything you can to make this day and night pass quicker. I should have told my spouse that we should have a big last supper and a movie to make the evening go quicker for him and me too. Praying for the families, good luck to all except those knowingly laying off the old folks. Maybe those that did it last year will be on this year's list and they can watch their five weeks of vacation disappear and job go to foreigners. See if it feels like "just business" when it is happening to them.

To those who are wishing they get RIF'd , unless you are living with your parents, the job market is not what the news media is saying it is , (less than 5% unemployment). I have seen 2 - 3 thousand (confirmed by the organizer) professional people like us at job fairs. If you are RIF'd, use the next 30 days to work on your resume and go on real interviews to practice marketing yourself. Train in Social Media apps.

For those with over 10 yrs service , It is a very different job market out there.

VZ- Jobs is a joke , those jobs have been reserved for the friends of whoever posted the job.

RIF'd Dec.2015) Avoid having had your livelihood so close to your job position that when your job position is eliminated, your livelihood goes with it....There is life after Verizon...May not be the same benefits or pay wise but there are companies out there that respect their employees:

Examples:

  • no need to check e-mail, attend conference calls and staff meeting calls when on vacation ,

  • Fridays off during summer months (on the company's dime, not yours) ,

  • You are REALLY off work - out of hours, not being paged in the middle of the night.

  • Your Manager REALLY IS A LEADER. and knows the job

  • Your Team WORKS as a team.

  • Be sure to keep close to your non-Verizon friends as they will always be there for you. After 2-3 months VZ friends may not be as close.

  • Exercise (walking is best),

  • READ your pension and/or 401K information because the investment company managng it, is hoping you do not.

  • HotLink the VZ benefits website, you will be using it a lot ,especially if you are retirement eligible

Good Luck to all young and over 50 yrs old employees. Come back on this site , we are here for you.

Usually they give you 30 days to apply for any internal open postings. If you just want out you can ask to be let go now and sign the paperwork iirc, not sure if you get to stay on payroll till the end if you sign or not. Me personally cause of benefits I would stay on as long as possible but start looking tomorrow. Honestly if you still work for vz you should keep you resume and LinkedIn up to date anyway

So when this rif occurs, do we still have to report to work for thirty days or will we be dismissed at that point? It used to be, you had 30 days to find something else....I am not looking for anything else in this shid hole.
