Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

6 weeks severance

I was laid off today. I was offered 6 weeks severance, have benefits until Friday and will get paid this Friday and next. 7 years and that's what I get. Also 1 year tuition waiver....Titanic is going down....

Someone mentioned suing UOP in this thread.....signing the severance agreement limits ability to get money from a lawsuit. Read the severance agreement. You may be able to sue, or file EEOC complaint but you can't get money. They totally cover they hineys in their severance agreement.

I think they would eliminate a lot of discrimination scenarios if they were consistent in how they 'eliminate' employees or offer them severance. They are all over the map. They aren't required to offer any, but if they are going to be consistent. Just makes sense. The April voluntary layoff was 4 weeks severance and you got to work to May and extend insurance coverage. Unemployment is 240.00 a week once it starts and DES subtracts all the severance and vacation pay you get in final check. And some folks get job service assistance and some don't. Just another way UOP can't do the right thing. Consistency.

I think severance will be offered as long as the ship is floating. If you choose to take the severance then you signed a clause saying you won't talk about things that go on. If you don't need to take the severance don't.

Read the severance agreement and know that severance is taxed HEAVILY....so 6 weeks severance is different than 6 weeks regular payroll. And COBRA insurance premiums are SO MUCH higher than standard medical premium and are still increasing. CHECK IT OUT. Try to get job service assistance and research the firms they are offering for job service assistance (online reviews). Is the job assistance just a resume service? Unemployment subtracts any severance or vacation pay you get in final paycheck. So unemployment will not start right away. You only get the month's of vacation that you have EARNED, not a full year's worth. Like if you have 4 weeks per year starting in Sept. and get laid off in Nov, then you have only accrued the vacation hours from Sept, Oct and Nov, you don't get paid the 4 weeks of vacation for whole year. And 401k is another issue. Their severance agreement has non-compete clauses and clauses that say you can't talk bad about them or file any monetary law suits against them. Good Luck.

Word to wise 2.0: Don't be complacent or make assumptions about severance. There is no law that compels UoP to consistently apply the same formula to calculate severance, or to even offer severance at all! The longer this goes on, the more likely it is that severance will diminish or disappear. If you are offered a package - take it! This is a parade you want to be in front of.

UOP will be cutoff from federal FA in December and will likely close in new year.

Typical severance, it's been the same for years.. There is a max on weeks you get, so if you think because you have been working several years that you will get tons of weeks paid out- guess again, and yes- you will need to pay Cobra out of your unemployment- that's a large chunk. Word to wise- get your resume polished. YOU are in charge of your own career- OWN IT!! No company owes you a living for the rest of your life.
