i am sure it is not AT&T's new strategy but I never saw it this close to home in our group. We have an indivduals that is way past his 75 year (service and age) mark. He is looking for early retirement package. Instead a couple of weeks ago his managers came up to him with a voluntary layoff package asking if he is interesting in taking. If the package is taken the person will need to be off payroll by end of year so what happens to bonus and the he needs to decide in 48 hours. Looking at the information in the package he said no way I will wait for retirement or official layoff. Now, here is the thing. We have almost no people in the group most of our staff is laid off already. We are down to bear minimum doing the jobs of 5 people each. If this person execepted the layoff package there is no one that will be able to fill his space at this time. Out leadership in Tech Dev is looking to decrease head count through first voluntary and than involuntary layoffs. We are facing a new reorg. AT&T is a crazy place.

Everyone thinks if they keep waiting the offers will get better; not likely. Plus they really DONT want to go and give up the easy paycheck for a job they've been doing for 40 years; just an excuse to stay.
