Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

This time was different

I've seen few layoffs already, but seeing who got cut this time - this is really something different.

Engineering have never been cut so heavily at higher grades. I would say, that this time they chopped the engineering's head. The numbers of Fellows and DEs - at corporate level, but also some capable PEs and TLs - in some BUs, who has been cut - is tremendous. It remains to be seen, what comes out of that - either they will find a new set of engineering leaders and make it really a point of turn-around, or the company will go down the toilet even faster.

Chuck clearly took a big risk here - personally, I think he's gonna burn himself on that.

working anywhere in the country, great pay, 26 vacation days a year (after 15yrs), 11 federal holidays, flex work schedules, pension, sweet 401k, leaving work at 5pm, and having to answer to no one but yourself

I'm a director and one of the extremely talented (and very modest) people being cut this round. Seeing the posts here, I'll share how it looks from my viewpoint:

1) No question, the company needs a massive shake up. I'm not sure if firing directors is aiming high enough though. From where I sit, my boss is a talented innovator, his boss is a talented innovator, and neither of them can move the good ship Cisco one iota from it's course headed directly at the iceberg.

2) Both of these guys are very senior, make a lot of money (so did I). They both make a lot of good noise about innovation. But somehow, even at their level, they are just powerless minions of "the Company". "The Company" despises internal innovation, and thinks that talking about innovation or buying innovative companies somehow makes Cisco innovative. If they ever said what they really think about Cisco, they would be fired in a blink.

So. Don't blame the directors. They are as helpless as you. They are empowered only to commit Hari Kiri. After 15 years, I have yet to meet anyone at Cisco with the power, vision or commitment to bring change. Maybe a clean sweep (throwing out babies with bathwater) is the only option left.

I'll miss the money.

Well I have a list of architects to cut off. Complete out of dated folks, incapable of following the digital movement, and just hiding behind burocratic sh--....

Go Chuck and renew this company, or give me my package and F you!!!

True.. culling of experienced folks, ultimately broke spine of Cisco engineering.

But reality is as it is... We live in times of marketectures, and real engineering is rarely needed.

The organization in most BUs is a mess. IT, Engineering....all the same. Seems like all the redundancy and confusion is caused by all the fiefdoms that have been allowed to emerge. It's just one jack$ss Director after another with a bad idea, an army of mindless robots and a budget.

This will end badly.

That's why I survived this time. Let's wait for next September.

I hope they were reducing redundancies in order to consolidate BUs. The organization has to be rationalized. It's a mess.
