Dimwit, many of Chevron's BUs are wholly-owned subsidiaries. They can be shut down, sold and written off. This shows how poorly educated in general, the "engineers" are at this old oil company.

I wouldn't say it's the dumbest thing I've heard or read on this site. Although a bankruptcy is not the correct word or the actual result that could happen, the "demise" of AMBU in the sense of it's viability as a business enterprise is a very real likelihood. Would you agree with that?

AMBU bankruptcy is maybe the dumbest thing I have seen on this board, and that's really saying something.

More likely what you mean is that AMBU has a negative NPV and the purchase has been written off Chevron books along with all the reserves. Not too different from many other upstream assets in the industry. Look at poor Exxon.

I've scoured the Internet to verify the OP's misunderstanding or purposeful misinformation. Nowhere can this story be found. The most recent story is from Jan 2016 where it was rumored that Nigel Hearne was leaving AMBU on his way to ABU, which later materialized as valid. We all know that AMBU had undergone a reorganization before Nigel's departure, but there's absolutely no indication of any recent Chapter 11.

As pointed out by the previous, How can a Business Unit file for bankruptcy? It cannot, unless it is legally structured as a subsidiary. Either way, the story story sounds bogus to me. Maybe there's the beginning of a rumor for another restructuring in the works. That much I might be able to swallow.

I'm not at all surprised that AMBU filed for bankruptcy, OP. I can only pray that Chevron Corporation doesn't ever do the same. I'm retired now and chose to take the Chevron annuity.
