Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Just like Follett

A University of California IT employee whose job is being outsourced to India recently wrote Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) for help.

Feinstein's office sent back a letter addressing manufacturing job losses, not IT, and offered the worker no assistance.

The employee is part of a group of 50 IT workers and another 30 contractors facing layoffs after the university hired an offshore outsourcing firm. The firm, India-based HCL, won a contract to manage infrastructure services.

That contract is worth about $50 million over five years and can be leveraged by other university campuses -- meaning they could also bring in HCL if they so choose.

The affected IT employees, who work at the school's San Francisco (UCSF) campus, are slated to lose their jobs in February and say they will be training foreign replacements.

This isn't a social security issue. Social Security is easily fixed by simply raising the ceiling of earned income that is taxed. Currently, the first $118K in earned income. If that number was to increase to $200K, Social Security would be solvent.

Here's the rub, it's earned income. So board members and family members (the folks who own Follett) don't pay a penny into Social Security if they're living off of dividends. That's investment income. It's taxed at a lower rate and it isn't subject to SS taxes. They ship your job to India, Mexico, Slovokia or wherever. They company pays them a higher dividend because its more profitable. You're out of a job and will likely take a pay cut at your next job. The Social Security fund takes a hit, too.

The results speak for themselves. Look at ORPOS, Efollett and CTWEB. Complete failures.

Horrible practice. I think US citizen should have some input into personal data especially any type of health information sent overseas into foreign developments centers.

UCSF is a major medical research and teaching campus. While there are medical schools at Davis, UCLA, UCSD, too, UCSF is a big deal. They may be dealing with patient records. They'll likely have to configure and release software that is used in the medical care of people. This isn't a good practice.

Train them wrong. You still get your last hours and they are even more clueless than they would have been anyway. This many years into the fools gold of outsourcing to a third world country these places will only get the dregs anyway.

After going through this at Follett, the worst part was training my replacement. Emotionally devastating.
