Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

AT&T "Stories"

Over the past year, but more aggressively within the past few months, AT&T has been collecting what is being referred to as user stories detailing what Management and non-Management do on a daily basis. Whichever group you're in this activity should be very concerning.

They do that to decide how to transfer responsibilities to someone else. Like another person said they did that with authorized retailers. they did it this year when they wanted to downsize or a few years ago when they eliminated market and regional jobs and made them national ones

I recall past days where the AT&T people I would encounter in the same customer deals I was competing in (Ameritech, SBC roles) were miserable. They described a culture of fear and threats from several layers of leadership...just the scenario that exists since the "pooling of common interests" with the AT&T/SBC alliance...it speaks volumes to the reality that most current AT&T employees face of intimidation management within the corporation now...that culture is enabled by Randall and his minions regardless the politically correct "work/life balance" baloney spewed daily by AT&T leadership...employees as liabilities indeed...most are grateful to be employed in a highly competitive, vigorous business, but the abuse is unnecessary...JMHO

User stories are central to the "Agile" soft ware development process, perhaps the surveys and forms that were cited are part of a project to automate the functions employees now perform.

All I need is to go into work and have an interview with the Bob's. A surplus is less than a month away once that happens. Have you seen my stapler?

You are correct, employees are considered Liabilities not assets. Assets have value.

Thanks, @1pld #GOLD post, indeed.

If you think any employee is an asset, you need to take a look at which column in the balance sheet payroll is under. The basic balance sheet equation is Assets-Liabilities=Equity. Here is a hint. Payroll is not under Assets or Equity.

So they are doing exactly what they did in the movie Office Space? Amazing.

"What would you say...you do here?"

Bye, bye useless management.

Automating what Associate directors do is very easy since mos of them do absolutely nothing but schedule useless meeting. Automating support fictions of hands on people is entirely a different story. For that you will need to build a learning system. Good luck doing it. AT&T still runs most of the departments using spreadsheets compiled through manual efforts. First automate reporting using real time data than we can talk about a learning system.

Don'y forget they have to reduce their 'carbon footprints'. Carbon footprints aren't always emissions coming from energy use in office buildings, Hvac units, fleets of vehicles, generators, etc...

CARBON FOOTPRINTS ARE PEOPLE!!!!! Open your eyes. It's a job culling to meet 'sustainability goals'.

They did something like this in the authorized retailer position. We had to fill out a survey about when our retailers would call us to ask questions, cart forms, credit request and so on. We had to totally step back from the stores and just be a support/admin for them and not coach on products and services. Then a few months later we got laid off. Agents will be doing cart forms soon and they can do credits themselves...

They want to reduce our work to a series of repeatable tasks with the thinking that eventually they can plug-n-play people in to the work.

Also this is clearly a step towards outsourcing all the work currently done by FTE.

But fortunately this whole effort seems to be very poorly managed,

We are not people with families, we are just assets that need to be marginalized and cut to reduce costs, so the top management can make outrageous amounts of money.

What did Randy make last year, something like $23 MIllion?

No it's being done by the new automation team being led by SVP Steve Stine in addition to the VPs of all the business units. They want to understand what each title does during the day so they can better automate the job which itself is partially being done using outside resources.

I've heard of something similar - is this being done by some outside company ?
