To imply most Landmen are unethical is complete garbage! What is that based on? There are unethical people in all professions. Even engineers and CEO's. For instance Noble has been fabricating their reserves for years! This is being done by engineers and blessed by managers. No Landmen involved whatsoever. People in glass houses should not throw stones. Furthermore Stover is an idiot.
I agree that most landmen are unethical to some degree especially the younger ones. They've largely done this to themselves.
I have known Dave Stover for over 30 years and he has no respect for landmen or the land department. In fairness, he's seen some sh--ty landmen in action, but he has disdain for even the best. There is no way in hell that he will put someone with a land background into any position that an engineer can possibly perform, even very poorly.
Good comments @JIBfnow-2orl. Problem is the "leadership" is tone deaf. Stover and his crew have repeatedly demonstrated they are incapable of separating fiction from reality. Logical considerations don't influence these people. Perhaps that's because they don't understand the business fundamentals or perhaps it's because they are pursuing a self serving agenda. I think it's both. In any case, they've selected subordinate managers based on their loyalty and willingness to shamelessly support poorly considered and warped decisions and not for their technical abilities or experience. Don't expect the situation to change so long as Stover, Cunningham, Fisher, Willingham, et al are in control.
Anyone notice how fouled up land departments have been since engineers took over everywhere? Nobody is trained correctly and this division of duties, title separation and assembly line mess is just that. Delays drilling and production. DO should not have to try to fix what is being done wrong. Sometimes it is too late to fix it. No one is getting good training at Noble and it's too easy to blame someone else for failures. Lack of coordination and nothing good. Give land back to real landmen and not to lawyers and engineers who have little to no good experience and you might get a unit drilled without title and lease failures. Just a freaking thought. Noble, listen up. Get some old hands in there who know what the hell they are doing and can train your new landmen to do the jobs. There is nothing new here. Software and that is easy. But if they don't know what they are doing you can hire three times the people and still get no further ahead. Let real landmen run land. And quit buying crap properties and paying too much for all of them. You hamstring yourself before you've even begun. And gut your due diligence dept. They failed you every time in the last 6 years. Write better JVs and AAAs. Crappy contracts put you under too many constraints and cost you too much money. Start putting your good people first and you might survive. Top management needs to take a chill and put someone who knows what to do in charge because you all have driven the company into a huge ditch and nearly off the cliff. If you give yourselves bonuses and raises this year or next, you may be beyond redemption.
