Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

5500 is a misleading number. I think the original CRN news of 14K was right.

Just looking at the size of folks impacted around me I think 5500 is misleading.

If 60% business for Cisco comes outside US/Canada, why Cisco so much headcount in US. Shut down costly Centers like San Jose. Half of San Jose employees are Indians/Chinese on H1Bs . You will get those Indians for 5 times cheaper in Bangalore and they work even harder and highly motivated to succeed. Cisco should shut down Us operations and move all development/Testing work to India. Almost all major MNCs are doing the same.

I think csg is unlikely to survive much outside india...there is even a offshoot of csg in chennai now...hcl with whom we have a long term relation in hq chennai

@1aat - Routing and Switching got the budget they were looking for (sort of) and didn't get impacted (not so sure on the engineering side). But they've had a hard few years with headcount/budget reductions. So, there are projects in full swing. But all this was before the latest Q4 numbers for SP - so they might not escape next time (and the SP results are probably a direct result of the cuts of the last few years).

Drone in trenches: good idea but it won't work due to acquisitions and massive hiring of cheap new labor.

This cut was big. You can tell by the parking lot.

Isn't it a legal / SEC requirement to publish # of employees in the annual submissions/report ?

Ok, so any investment world numbers are fudgable as recent years have taught us, but something like total employee #s faked, that would be a sort of # quite easy for many observers to see if it was off, and give an issue among the analyst world ?

Investment world loves layoffs "more productivity, lower costs...", so Cisco would want to reflect it there (quietly) if it there are in fact more that officially said now ? No ?

Next annual report let's see what # of employees are given ? Is it 73 K minus 5.5 K ?

5.5 doesnot include contractors, right?

5500 vs 14,000 who is going to actually confirm whether Cisco has let go 5500, 7000, 11000 or 14,000? If Chuck Robbins stands on a podium and declares 5500 layoffs media just reports it but is there an independent entity that actually tracks it?

Do a round of layoffs. wait a month to analyze any performance fallout, and do another round all over again.

Yup it is more like 20K , 14K was leaked, but to quell any serious domino effect with folks they are not expecting to quit should resign. They have officially announced 5.5k.

BTW its amazing to see that LR is a lingo for Layoff now officially in Cisco ...

All the best guys ... !!! I chose the highway when I could .... never could sleep peacefully here ... no one is safe ...

our group took a 50% hit.and remnant projects are in eol'ed kind of mode. we survivor bees are busy in glassdoor and preparing resumes and reviewing past work. we are not expecting any retention bonus or any bonus. last payhike was more than 2 yrs ago except to the "favoured few" camp followers close to the powers-that-be.

1rba: we know the promotion is only limited to those who are from the same village as the VP or Directors. Are you kidding that $2000 will make all. Cisco worker bees happy with the toxic work environment and racial/age discriminations?

October promotions are coming. They will throw in $1500-$2000 per year and boost the morale tremendously .

There were so called silent LR's in Cisco early this year and the last year. In fact, my boss was one. The total number is always higher and the way the senior management handles it is that they want to see more people to leave on their own. This way no need to pay the severance. In the past higher bonus was paid to the survivors in order to boost the morale. It is said that something is different this time. More worker bees will volunteer to leave after they find out the shrinking bonus.

My experience is that corporations always say something like 5-8% are to be layed off. But the end number is usually double.
