Half the employees at Follett come to work and put in about 50% effort. They are just coasting.
Fact is- a layoff is the nice way out. 3 years ago they brutalized long term employees. The goal was getting the employee to resign (firing was O.K. too). The larger goal was to reduce the risk of large severance payouts.
Frankly the comment asking people to decide to stay to re-commit themselves makes sense. By staying, you're making a decision. I believe staying is a poor decision, but it is a decision all the same. That's a fair ask.
Bottom line, Follett became a savage company when it comes to employees. If you decide to stay, you know this.
Take care of the employees?? In what sense? Follett is targeting their long term employees for layoff. It is crystal clear that performance has nothing to do with the layoffs. They are consistently getting rid of long term employees. It doesn't matter how hard you work - evenings, weekends, vacations. If you have been at Follett for 15 years or more, you are a target.
We are in a catch 22 folks. We lost money for the first time last fiscal year. We have to improve the bottom line to improve salaries and bonuses. You each have to make your own decision, but if you decide to stay we need those that are willing to put forward the effort as a team. We are all short handed.
Based on Follett's history, they have been good to employees except when MLS and the Kmart crew took over. Nader said the Follett family told him to take care of the employees and I believe him.
Believe me, it will feel good for each of us to meet the challenge and make Follett profitable again. It is great be part of a successful team that overcomes adversity. Improvise, adapt and overcome.
There is no one left on home office to call you back. My dept had 12 people at one time, now we are done to 4. More stores, more workload, less staff, no time to answer emails or calls.
Or how new store managers are put in place with little or no support. Told to reach out to resources in other stores who are so swamped with labor cuts trying to keep their own store afloat they have limited time to help or don't know what the solution is so then reaching out to home office, who should be the first place to go to, should be their job, some never get back to you.
Don't do it. It won't make any difference when the next round of lay offs comes.
