Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Learn to code or else

If you don’t develop the new skills, you won’t be fired — at least AT&T won’t say as much — but you won’t have much of a future. The company isn’t too worried about people leaving, since executives estimate that eventually AT&T could get by with one-third fewer workers.

Taking a few skillport classes and learning to code after that is a joke. We are talking about enterprise grade applications here with petabytes of data. It takes 20 years to learn how to do it properly.

I wouldn't call AT&The a dream company to work for. It's more like a slow motion nightmare now. I'm still surprised they can recruit top personnel when there are much better companies to work for.

I was a software engineer at AT&T and I was laid off. I am an expert level programmer in any language you can name. I have well over a decade experience coding. So, if you think learning some basic programming in the next few months will save you, go for it.

The assertion made by the original poster is absurd. Coding jobs will be outsourced; you're not safe.

It will never be up to you to keep your own job, many programmers and PM that used to Support our team are already gone, my Area manager advertise our team as a group of SMEs, we end up here on the previous surplus/ layoffs 2015, replacing the seasoned managers that used to handle these accounts, It’s not a great work environment. Low- and mid-level 1 people are generally dropped into a project with no background and been told that they’re experts on whatever giant, most of us have to deal and explain products we never supported, about 30 legacy products, We definetelty fake it and learn on the job, that is the way we do business in PCG

This whole focus on pivoting your skills is BS! If you think spending any time learning new things in hopes of staying with the company you're drinking the koolaid. In fact AT&T has well educated, experienced "coders" working for them right now that are being laid off or not used in favor of outside vendors.
