Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Today I saw most rampant racism ever in my life

So we had a team of ca. 40 people. ca 30 of Indian descent, and about 10 of different ethnicity. Similar grades.

8 people were cut. NONE of them from the Indian group.... All of them of different shades of white, all of them 35+ yrs old. People who were cut, were from the top quartile of performance for sure.

Frankly - It's disgusting... People who were making this decision are two layers of Indians.

I don't have anything to Indians themself - I know, many ICs who work really hard. But there is something twisted in minds of Indians who became managers.

Similar thing happened to our group this February LR, none of those impacted are Indian, though 90+% of groups are Indian engineers

The strange thing about this discussion is that it would NEVER survice thelayoff.com now.
Today, if anyone raises the issue of racism by Indians at Cisco, the entire topic is deleted.
This web site is actively censoring topics. Now certainly some posters engage in terrible racist remarks themselves, and those postings should be deleted. But the censorship is general.
Even if statements about Indian racism are stated in a civil fashion, they are all deleted.

This topic, done many years ago, would not survive today.

Basically, if thelayoff.com was involved, Rosa Park's story of not getting off the bus would have been deleted because it involved racism.

The broken green card pgm with eb3 current date 2004 also trapped a lot of indians in limbo inside cisco. After sitting 15 yrs where can they go..netwk industry has shrunk...many giants are dead

If there is discrimination case, Cisco will easily prove it wrong as the number of Indians cut exceeding others in California. Whoever enjoyed high pay and no real work are removed across USA.

Not just complaints. Take action!!!

Talk to lawyers if anyone feel you are discriminized.

Can someone help to setup a web page for a class lawsuit against Cisco System on this issue (discrimination or racism) ?

It is a valid case.

Not talking about the born here Inidan decent but new H1B Indian's have no clue how to manage a team, American culture (Hello, you came here to learn the culture otherwise back to India). In my team H1B resource came here and in 1 yr became a manager (you guessed it Director was Inidan) and got rid off me. Cisco greed and hey they didn't learn from SUN systems. It will go down eventually with "Sleepy Chuck"

Agreed with OP here. Diversity my a--! I don't work for Cisco but let's just say Cisco's rival. I see the same exact problem here is racism! Many teams with Indian managers favor Indian colleagues. When layoffs come guess what? They'll trim non-indians first and few months later they'll hire Indians again.

I'm of Indian decent and I agree, Indian managers are racists. I don't work for Cicso but I do work for another large IT company in the bay area, it is my first exposure with working with large teams composed mostly of Indians. The lack of diversity in teams lead by Indians and Chinese is sickening. And here is the rub, Indians don't work nor are they any smarter than people from other ethnic groups; they tend to have a lot of family responsibilities which make them seem lazy at times. The come in at 10 and leave by 4 mentality. Vote for Trump and he'll end the H1B program. Vote Clinton if you want more of the same.

Agree with that "Indian managers only want their own "kind" in their teams." I see that on my team every day... they protect themslves, but also they make their employees work hard and hard, so they can help the managers to succeed - all that chat of "help me help you" and they can work very strongly this way....

I am an Indian and in my 20 years of career I have not seen such a pathetic hierarchy and dominance of one particular nationality forming the entire group from top to bottom. Most of the companies put a lot of emphasis on diversity. I have been managing teams and I was categorically told to keep the team diverse (indirectly have less Indian names in the team) and I have delivered what I have been asked to do and being an Indian manager, I have never favored any particular race or nationality. I absolutely enjoy managing diverse team with different cultural backgrounds. I am damn sure Cisco HR and so called ELT don't give a sh--. For them diversity is confined to hiring more women execs and LGBTs.

OP here.

I'm not saying that anyone laid off in the company doesn't deserve that.

But I know the situation in our team.

We didn't have any deadwood. Folks impacted, weren't at higher grades then the Indian group (actually it's the opposite, as for quite a while already only the Indian group were getting promotions).

But those impacted had two things in common - ethnicity and age.

If you have a split 30:10, and are selecting 8 people out of this randomly, you should select 6 from the first group and 2 from the second. Culling nobody from the first group, and 8 people from the second, in lack of any other explanation, IS racism.

I don't think it's true. From our group, 2 people got impacted and both are Indians and their managers also Indians. There is nothing against non-Indians.

As most of the companies in valley are required core hands on people not just talking at high level and managing. Cisco being old company, it's not upto the mark w.r.t hands on experienced people. Most of the full timers are just managing like Program Manager/Project Manager. For that matter even most of the analyst and engineer roles are manage their work by handing over to contractors and oversee what's happening. These kind of people of definitely not worthy enough to keep for Cisco as a company. Whether anyone agrees or not, it's true. Whoever, works in Cisco know that fact.

In our team, few people don't even know how to first of all talk in meetings (including Indian and non-Indian members), how to have heatlthy discussions, though in team since 9 yrs or so, still don't know the basics of system. Don't you guys think these kind of people should be sacked? Being in the system for so long and lack of knowledge, they are infact causing more damange to the company. Because of them work is getting slow and delayed. For every small thing, they need a meeting and hour and hours of discussions which does not lead any outcome.

As a company Cisco to grow in this competitive market, Cisco should be on par with other companies and sack these kind of people. However, I am really not sure how diligently an individual is choosed to layoff. I hope they are considering to sack only such kind of people who does not do work but only do timepass.

Even after this layoff, there will so much crap to be removed.

BTW, I am in Cisco last 10 yrs and saw many layoffs. Never ever saw someone got impacted who is really talented.

Look at the Cisco job page.

Search SW engineer, for example: 9/11 pages are all Bangalore listings. 2/11 pages include San Jose HQ and the rest of the world.
