the HR lady said its the same whether you take the volunteer or not. either way you get the 60 day notice PLUS severance. there is no bonus for taking the volunteer over what i said above.

hopefully they actually provide details tomorrow in the option to take the early out. our leader couldn't provide much information to any questions asked. the 60 days and unemployment eligibility are huge.

I am interest in volunteering. What rights did you waive when volunteering? They said we would have the same 60 days either way.

For those interested. Some of us in TP&E, went thru a voluntary program earlier in the year. Those who volunteered to be included in the "in-voluntary" surplus pool and were accepted had 3 weeks to be off the payroll. Some accepted and left with their company severance in addition to retirement benefits and pensions if vested. Those who do not volunteer and were surplused, had 60 days to search within the company, and if unsuccessful, left with severance as well.

I do think this will be a big number which is why they are giving the option in EG to take the surplus. Our AVP said this was across all of the Lurie org. The waiting is terrible

ATT doesn't care about their Mgrs... I am sure the majority of those affected will be in the lower levels, especially 1 & 2, they give good lip service to us but if they really cared they would not torment us with this EXTREMELY long time frame of not knowing if we will be out of work. Whoever is making these decisions is not doing so out of concern for their fellow employees but for some other reason.. I am thinking it is due to the PR this will get as someone said above. I have worked for the company for many years as have many of my close friends (15-25 years) ATT is not a culture which respects that anymore, even if you do the work and keep up with current trends and knowledge as they push.

I think a strike is a very real concern, well timed (depending on perspective) it could be a real operational mess. Esp on a large scale mgt layoff. This delay just buys att a little more time.

Volunteering doesn't impact severance. Imagine you're any age and you don't like the company any longer. You've entertained looking for another job (in fact you may have headhunters calling you with really good offers)and boom, an announcement is made.

Not hard to imagine...young or old(er)

not true, HR said today that no matter if you volunteer or not, everyone gets the same severance package PLUS the 60 day window

To they person asking why someone would volunteer, imagine you are in your late 50s/early 60s. You plan on retiring soon but are waiting until you have a little bit more put back. Now you have the opportunity to retire on what would be your last day if surplused and get your severance payment which gives you that last little bit you needed.

Or imagine that because of all the layoffs going on you've been looking for another job. You found one but if you just resign you don't get anything from AT$T. Now you can volunteer and get your severance payment and get your new job.

I can assure you, no one is concerned about a strike.

The delay is probably because they are anticipating a strike and the people they are about to lay off may be needed to fill holes during the strike.

why would anyone take the volunteer?

Just had a similar delay call. Lurie impacted EG groups will rec a form tomorrow to volunteer for surplus. All surplus benefits will apply. Three days to decide and turn in form. Once volunteers are in they will then take 2 wks for remaining surplus decisions.

If there is a delay I don't think allowing people to volunteer is the real reason for a nearly 3 week delay. Self selecting has always been an option. I think those nps surveys, these boards, and overall employee sentiment could spell disaster. I believe the pull back is likely to come up with a communication/pr/ response plan because the big one is coming...and cwa on strike as well does not bode well. Too much is going on....for randy to handle.

Allowing people to volunteer opens you up to a lopsided severance. If you are location based it allows you to have the possibility that everyone in one specific area to walk out requiring the company to re hire or transfer people into the position with longer drive times etc.

I think that's false

Volunteering would result in forfieting severance according to the HROnestop document outline.

Surplus has been delayed til end of month. Allowing us to volunteer. Doubt the reliability of the OP.

I'm believe it. It's obviously across multiple organized and levels. How do u get to 50% of total workforce by 2020....you have a large layoff interspersed with smaller ones.

I can't speak to this specific case, as I'm not in EG, but in recent ATO layoffs the folks who were laid off were basically notified via email that they were selected to be let go. The documents they received via email had either info that they needed or where to go to get info they needed.

thats correct, these people will be given 60 days notice to find other employment within AT&T and then their severance kicks in.

they will still be on payroll for 60 days

Thanks for clarifying, that makes sense. Still, is this going to be handled by one on one meetings with HR + manager? Or do you think managers will have to bear the bad news by themselves?

That's not how a surplus works. If true, these are layoffs, not firings. These people will be given a certain number of days to look for new jobs and will be given severance if/when they don't find one. They will not be escorted from the building on Friday. Security is generally not needed, as anyone creating a "disturbance" would forfeit their severance payment.

That's gonna take an army of HR and security people unless they plan on chaining doors shut. What POSITION does this reliable source have that they know it's 40k? (Without giving away the sources identity please). Are they involved in creating the press release? Marshaling HR and security staff to escort people out? Are they buying and delivering empty boxes so that people can pack up their crap? Are they involved in removing email and network access? Or changing security badge access?
