Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

You know what's funny....

A year ago, I received training for one week to do a union job. I jumped in when they went on strike, and the team I was on outperformed union workers within two weeks.

The union workers who do this for a career, are out two months, and they require training upon their return?

I think these people are waaaaay overpaid.

I'm EWA and sure that 20 years of experience outperform 4 days training 10 months ago, but when union people tell here that now they have 2 years of OT because of EWA, this is BS. If union techs were so great, why did I have so many "Chronic" customers at the beginning of EWA ? If EWA was so bad, why towards the end of EWA I had to fix customers with due date in future? Means no backlog.

@ndv: The union is effectively a monopoly so they cost a lot and you get less work per capita. Since they are paid on seniority there is no incentive whatsoever for them to do a good job, and there is really no competition because no matter how hard someone works they'll get compensated based on seniority. Those poor folks could really apply themselves and do a kick-assjob but they'll be treated no better than someone with the same tenure who does a lousy job. This aspect of a union workforce is really backasswards and the employees are compensated on all the wrong things.

Unions encourage mediocrity and discourage going the extra mile. Verizon's union is the perfect example.

"People that actually want to do their job"....... Well since the regular workload was " handicapped" I can't believe this crap. I know of MANY mobile pickets that the job dispatched was a cake trouble , or an existing install. How do I know this? .... They .... Yes THEY were driving a suburban , no ladder or climbing gear. The other BS about this is why do we have a 2 month backlog of work if the well trained work force was able to do the job ? All the EWA , such crap leave the shop , go to panera bread for an hour... Muttle through a day and break your arm patting yourself on the back.

As a manager of union employees, I’ve been thinking about performance metrics, and the requirement that associates be held to them. If the company feels they are paying premium salary and benefits packages to these employees, they feel they should be getting premium work from them… not just quality, but quantity. If the employees weren’t so expensive, maybe they wouldn’t feel the need to wring every little bit of performance out of them. Also, they pay the associates the same based upon seniority… not performance. So, to use a car metaphore, every employee is paid and gets benefits as if they were a corvette, but most perform as if they were a 4 banger pickup. Until the workforce doesn’t cost so much, they are going to expect to get their value out of their investment.

I was a CWA member for 15 years and took a job in management 10 years ago. I had a crew of 20 people reporting to me, This was the worst thing I could have ever done in my career at VZ. It was nothing but a headache dealing with the union worker's from the 1st day I went into management. I was in charge of a crew installing FIOS. None of them wanted to work. Anytime you said anything to them about their work all they would say to me is "I'm going to file a grievance with the union". Finally had to leave VZ after 25 years of service. Now I'm a supervisor of 25 non union employees and when you ask them to do their job they do it. Leaving VZ was the best thing I could have done.

uit -- Just curious, which group were you working with? My supervisor said almost the exact same thing, especially the part about the mule.

In fact when discussing the union workers lazy and worthless were two words he used in just about every sentence.

Nobody is saying you are not good at your job. In fact, you guys are most likely the best fit. Certainly better than EWA’s.

It seems to me that the OP is saying that EWA’s got a minimum of training months ago, and were able to hit the ground running. And, in short order, his/her team was able to outperform BAU metrics. Maybe it was a small team, or maybe it was only certain metrics… maybe it was the same standards you guys are held to. The anonymity of this forum dictates details be withheld.

In light of this, it is suspicious that the people who do this on a regular basis need training after only being away from their job for 2 months. I would have to agree that it looks like union work avoidance. Something I’ve seen firsthand with many unions. Regardless of what trade the union covers, they are good at their trade. However, they are masters of work avoidance on all levels.

And, while we’re at it… We live in a world where companies seek out, and pay top dollar for talent and skills they require. if you need an organization devoted to convincing you employer that you are worth X, Y, and Z… I hate to say it, but you probably aren’t.

The EWA's could have accomplish a lot more if those idiots would have gotten out of the way. I have work for another company before and have to deal with union workers in the field. It's true, they are freaking lazy.

You EWA's act like children when you receive what amounts to a participation medal. "Good job john, your the best" or "suzy you out performed today"....yada yada yada. Fact is, the company was losing millions in revenue, hemorrhaging customers and losing it's reputation. If not the case, then why for the love of god would the company agree to anything with the union. I don't wish any spreadsheet jockey ill will, only those that post complete nonsense on here.

Last time you "jumped in" to do our work it was for two weeks and it created 2 years of forced overtime for me to fix your crap. We will see in the coming days what kind of damage you have caused in 2 months span

the bottom line is this boils down to one of two things...

Either, these people are truly mentally deficient, or the training is just more stall tactics... Work Avoidance. anything to get out of work. the union strives to get paid for doing nothing.

Look at how many bragged about being idle and unproductive for the past two months.

This what they value. not being productive, respectable members of society.

My EWA manager was definitely not looking forward to the union coming back. According to him getting union employees to do anything takes an act of congress, and they purposely slow down the flow of work to lower expectations. And the union people know they can't be laid off so they slack off even more and act like jerks to the newer hires that actually try to work hard. I can't imagine working around that mentality or leading a team of people who don't want to work.

That's laughable! I guess someone has been giving you some faulty info. Been climbing for 20 yrs now and love it. I'm just glad I'm not stuck in a cubicle all day using the very internet that we union folk maintain. You are just a pathetic loser apparently. I'd wish you luck in life if you actually had one. Good riddance to you pieces of trash.

Trust me, I am not complaining. That's what we do! Just pointing out that you guys are full of sh--. I'll climb poles all day if that's what is needed to actually fix something. Seems to me you guys are just upset that we got a new contract and you guys were used like a piece of toilet paper. I guess I'll be laughing all the way to the bank. I'm just glad you guys actually were inept because now that extra OT is going into my pocket. I'm happy to fix what you guys couldn't. Nice try though.

Aww poor baby... had to climb a pole. What I heard is you lazy f's don't climb sh+t. If its above a step ladder, you call for a bucket truck. If you ever climbed a ladder, you'd wet your panties. EWAs climbed every day. We didn't have buckets. What a pussy...

I thought my union supervisor was going to cry when the strike was over and he realized he was going to have to start dealing with union employees again. He said it was a different world working with people who actually want to work and have a good attitude about their jobs.

He said working with the union members was like trying to get a mule to move, and if you are honest with them about their laziness they file a grievance.

taq - OTt caps removed for two weeks? Woohoo eh. So on which day are you going to complain about the OT? Day one? Day two? The union days are numbered and you guys were schooled by the EWA - look for all new thresholds to be forthcoming. And look for your managers to ride you like the dogs you are and then poof - one little thing goes wrong...and buh bye job!

OP: The issue is that the union people purposely do the minimum they can to get by, and they actually harass other union members who work hard and do more than what is expected (they don't want their expectations to go up which might force them to have to actually work hard).

Unfortunately that's the union culture and that's why so many companies fight tooth and nail to get rid of unions. They are like an invasion of roaches in that once they're there it's virtually impossible to exterminate them.

boy - Oh you DO care if we did 10 jobs a day. That's why all the picket monkeys put pressure on EWA to slow down so the supers don't have a new threshold to measure you losers by. We had EWAs targeted as supermen, and got harassed the most for that reason. You fuksticks can't measure up to EWAs and know it.

My garage super said that it was refreshing to have people looking to do the work, rather than people who look for reasons to get out of work. I had customers tell me they see picket monkeys parked in her back lot sleeping for 6 hours. She was pissed she pays for that and grateful we stepped in to fill the role for these losers. These uneducated F's were, are, and will always be incredible F'ing losers.

They technically did not get more Union members. 1600 crossed. They got promises for 1300 new members and 70 wireless store employees. The net is less Union members, unless they let the ones that crossed back in. I am sure the class and forgiveness apparent in the picketers will welcome them back with open arms. Then take into account the ones that will take packages and run, Union will be less than 30K by next time, if they are not sold off.
