Follett has been outsourcing for 3 years now. What benefits do we have to show for it? Several large scale failed projects. Cost overruns and budget timeline delays....not by weeks but months and years. A company that is only focused on hourly rate is missing 75% of the picture.

There are opportunities as noted in the article. I am IT in a user department and the offshore model has opened up new opportunities for me. In fact, while Follett IT is being laid off, my team actually grew last year. My team is 10 times more effective than the offshore teams as we know the business requirements and we have the skills to do the development at the same time. We also have a vested interest in the success and quality of our work.

To the IT developers that are being laid off, the best opportunities will be for those who have business and IT skills. Offshore teams are very poor communicators and do not understand the business side.

Self-service and Automation Rule: This is probably going to be a bigger slayer of India's IT outsourcing markets if it doesn't pay attention. By allowing personal devices and authorizing self-service, CIOs are slowly encouraging their business units to take care of their end-user computing. Automation is bringing in more efficiency into customer service, business processes, and cross-enterprise transactions that were traditionally managed by services firms.
