"But the little wheels keep me from falling!" My four year old pled his case. "If I don't have them I could fall down and get hurt!" He was right of course. It was time to take the training wheels off his bike. He would almost certainly fall and skin a knee more than once. He couldn't understand at the time why I was taking away something that had done so much good for him. He couldn't see how much those "little wheels" were holding him back. But the training wheels did come off. He wobbled a bit. Fell a few times. But now he flies. On his own. No longer needing to rely on anything but himself.
