Thread regarding Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) layoffs

Not really layoffs....

HP is migrating workers to low cost regions; the company is hiring like mad in those regions at the same time they are destroying their US workforce. I was laid off this week after nearly 20 years. The paperwork states my position was eliminated, but I spent a week retraining my replacement. Whaaat? The new person, pleasant as she was/is, did not have even one minute of experience or training in my work. I know HP is a hugely progressive company in public policies. I know many analysts are giving high marks to HP for its actions of late, but HP's heart seems black to core, is devastating thousands of workers, and its only strategy is to cut its way to success. Does that really ever work? Many studies say no layoffs are just the beginning of the death spiral. 20 years: I would not have expected it to end this way.

I was laid off and told that my position was eliminated. My same position was posted in my same department before I left HPE, and I found out they hired someone to replace me shortly thereafter. I had only worked there for 8 months. What kind of company does that?

Re:. : @H3TTeqP-rdiv

This isn't the result of a "Capitalist Society". Blaming capitalism for greed is like blaming modern medicine for malpractice. The "how" always matters.

Although you are correct about the right-to-work state issue, I find it petty that you would begrudge someone who is affected by unfair and/or unethical treatment the opportunity to vent a little.

While I am venting, let me also make this comment:

A "layoff" is what the auto industry did in the 1970s -- you were out of work with the possibility of being recalled when production picked back up. What we are experiencing now are firings ... plain and simple.

Thank you.

Most of these jobs referenced are in right to work states. It is not illegal to layoff anyone for any reason other than protected classes (race, religion, creed, etc.), and even THEN it is okay if that is not the primary reason. Being "screwed" is not relevant, so spare me the lawyer talk. Being laid off explicitly to save money is not something HPE invented, and they won't be the last. Whining won't change the fact we live in a capitalistic society and HPE is a publicly traded company and its shareholders are its number one concern. It sucks, but anyone who works at HPE and acts surprised or angry has had their head in the sands. This was obvious years ago. Keep your skills current, or save enough that you don't need to work. But expecting it to change is a waste of effort. It will be the same at your next job too.

I don't work for HPE but live in an HP town and know lots of Ex-Employees and a few current ones. How can they legally say you're job is being eliminated if you're training your replacements? I'd encourage you folks to talk to a lawyer. I think they're screwing the pooch here.

From the February layoff to the April layoff they changed the plan again. For years of service beyond 11 years it changed from 60% to 40%. I would not be surprised to see a class action suit filled against HP/HPE for their continued shenanigans.

No one expects to go that way. I was laid off from HPE last October when 70% of marketing was let go when Nefkins said he didn't need marketing. 95% of public sector marketing wss also let go. What is Meg thinking?

It will get better, I promise! I was WFR'd Nov, 2015 and I'm still looking for permanent work BUT it will get better. Just take advantage of the LHH career transition assistance and follow their suggestions. If nothing else, it will help process the frustration (I too trained my replacements from Costa Rica HPE office), so you can comfortably say 'due to a company reorganization my position was eliminated in the U.S.'. It took me until March to say it - i swear haha!!, but it WILL get better. Just don't let the anger get the best of you. You deserve better than what HP (as a whole) has done to us. Hang in there folks!!

I also got the standard "your position has been eliminated" two weeks notice this month, after 29 years with EDS, then HP and now HPE. Although I was not asked to train him, my replacement in India started a week before I was told. His internal rate is one-third of mine.

You hit it on the head with your title "Not really layoffs", because that's precisely the HP/HPE philosophy nowadays. After serving almost 12 years, I had no idea at the time they let me go, that my old position at HPE would later be posted on the HPE careers website (about three weeks) in the Costican area! So, I totally identify with what you're saying here, because it's all about true corporate downsizing - to hire cheaper labor and scale back on 'US dollars' being paid for the same position. It's the 'US corporate methodology' - trading quality for quantity. But you and I know that this is only a band-aide to substantiate temporary relief for continued losses, and will inevitably snowball into an endless abyss of dissatisfied customers - which only spells deeper losses in the long term. Most corporate bean counters haven't a clue on what they're doing. Time to work for myself.

It's the same in the UK. An endless race to the bottom. Ever since Mark Turd bought EDS the layoffs have been relentless. A disgusting attitude to people is the HPE way.

@H3TTeqP - Your job title was eliminated and guess what they will do next create a new title and will be doing the same thing as your old job title.

I am aware of two people who were given notice this month. Two weeks notice. Also the severance package recently changed paying out less for those with over 11 years of service. This is for HPE. I wish everyone the best of luck finding new employment.

A couple of questions:

Was this HPE, or HP Inc?

Were the replacements direct hires, contractors, or H1B/other visa workers?
