I wonder how bad our 1st quarter earnings will be... I presume it will not be as bad as people think?

Earnings or we should say lack of earnings is really bad. company will go under or get sold as we can't keep this performance up in the current price environment. Hope there is decent severances for those who make it to the end of the road.

Lay offs don't equal cost savings. COP management need to look at their sh--ty processes costing the company millions every hour of every day. If things get going again the cost base will return to 2014 levels. Ergo management have achieved sh-- all.

Analyst have a vested interests in cop stock and whatever their forcast regarding losses will not matter...... Debt is debt. Until prices break 60 and vendors such as Baker, Haliburton, and such, drop their costs so that cop is profitable then you may believe what analyst say. Until those two things happen there is nothing positive to say abou cop stock. I wouldn't expect you to understand but it's simple really cop financed their dividend to the tune of 24.88 billion along with other items that were spent on opex. At the end of last year COP was worth 48 billion and in debt 24.88 billion do you really think analyst should be positive about a stock that is only worth 24 billion after debt and has no real growth potential in terms of reserves plus is cash strapped, seriously!!!

Think things through before you open you make ignorant comments otherwise keep your mouth shut like the rest of them.

I never said it was pretty, just that some analysts (obviously not as smart as you) have forecasted where COP will be at the end of the quarter. IF COP is even a little better than the forecast, the stock price will tend to go up. IF COP under performs, the stock price will tend to go down.

If every investor knew what you know, I guess COP would be a penny stock be now.

Doesn't matter. Debt is debt is debt is debt.......24-28 Billion dollars...that's BILLION folks ....24-28 billion dollars in debt.... No optimism whatsoever COP's break even is still high.... And they are still not making money and they are only getting into more debt. Based on the debt they have it will take a long time to get out of that amount of debt.. Their debt to equity ratio is at >60% after first quarter they will likely be at 65%-68% if they hit 70% or more then all bets are off. Forget wha let the analyst say.

1st Qtr. 2016 will definitely be worse than 4th Qtr. 2015. WTI averaged about $8 lower. The question is how did COP do versus analyst projections. If one believes the hype that the bad quarter is already priced in the stock price, then a " not as bad as expected" earnings (losses) report can have a positive effect on the price.

Some analysts are saying revenues for 1Q16 will be about 10% lower than even 4Q15, although certainly lack of revenue wasn't the only factor making 4Q15 what it was overall.
