Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I wonder how many union haters...

Feel the same way about celebrities and sports players. I would guess most people who present us with such unintelligent, grammatical error-ridden posts have severe hard-on for their fave sports players. Newsflash, they're union also. Bet ya aren't on their message boards ripping them to shreds, insulting them with horrible accusations you know NOTHING about, and calling them names like the emotionally undeveloped juveniles you are.

And yet, here you are, attacking the union employees who simply want to continue surviving with a fair wage, not millions of dollars. We want to keep our jobs that we are grateful for. I feel like it's time for a reality check on here. There's more to life than union vs non-union and the bickering on here is absolutely 100% pathetic for what some consider the superior species. Everyone needs to get over themselves and worry more about what you do as an individual to contribute to society rather than rip apart people you don't even know, for whatever reason it is that you're doing it.

You think because there may be a few lazy unions workers or maybe you heard your dad say that once that they all are. Well, just because I know several racist non-union employees who work at Verizon and sexual harass anything with breasts, doesn't mean they all are. No one is on here talking g about THAT sh!t.

I think the OP has a great point, when we think about actors like Jennifer Lawrence and Robert DeNiro, we should associate them with those hot dog eating slobs on the picket line!

@sqx... Yes we have been doing that since August. Personally, I had no problem working while they negotiated, even if it took years, I knew that what I had before strike was better than what I will have now. There's far more involved than we know, and the employees who aren't in the union don't know the other half of the story. I can only assume that is the reason for so much animosity.

I keep seeing all the comments about the Union "trying to hold on to what we had"... I get that, i really do... But what company, what group, what part of society, Union or otherwise, still has the same as what they had 5, 10, 15 years ago. Sucks? Yes Reality? Also yes. By the way, couldn't you have held on to what u had if you didn't strike & kept working under the expired contract terms?

op, my apologies, I was so fired up by the stupidity in some of these posts that I didn't properly take the time to fully read your post and mistakenly thought you were on the opposite side of the fence. Reading some of this stupidity is starting to rub off, time for a swim break. Hey, at least unlike management, I can admit when I made a mistake. Peace!

"a beeper morphed into a cell phone" = "union morphed into unemployment"

Times change. Technology advances. Smart companies adapt to the current market conditions. There's no need for the quantity of wireline associates we currently have, with the company's desire to get out of wireline completely. Hire contractors or non-union employees to do whatever work is needed. Get rid of that massive union headache. Which is exactly what the company is doing.

op, newsflash jackoff, we don't hate on them because the owners who are paying them are primarily multi-billionaires. As I keep having to tell all of you "highly educated" posters, DO THE MATH. I'll even do it for you this time, because I'm beginning to think that you're not that educated or intelligent after all.

The following are close but not actual numbers, so please don't start posting "where did your numbers come from you idiot?"

example 1. Verizon........CEO $18 million.......worker..........$85,000...........differential of 225

example 2. NFL owner........$1 billion.........player..........$10 million..........differential of 1000

When you run the numbers you realize that what seems like a lot of money, isn't always a lot of money.

By the way, don't forget it's the athletes that are making the owners filthy rich and the average working lifespan of a professional athlete is only about 3.5-4.5 years.

@yxl...you're a prime example of who I'm talking about in my original post. You also confirm another theory I have, that trying to explain our battle to someone like you is more useless than a conversation with my wall. Carry on with your mind-numbing, brain cell sucking reality tv, as someone posted as their colassally lame defense. People like you make it impossible to have intelligent debate, and that really takes all the fun out of it.

Cause a beeper morphed into a cell phone. Now morph yourself into an intellegent somebody. Enroll in a school. If youre that interested in technology i suggest telecom management degree.

vbx - if you're fighting for everything you've always had, why don't you still carry a beeper?

Oh yeah, that's because things change over time.

OP spot on great post! Nnc- we don't feel entitled to anything, but the wages and benefits we have were fought for, not given to us out of the goodness of the company's heart. So are we gonna fight to keep them? DAMN RIGHT WE ARE!!!!

SAG-AFTRA is not what it once was under Reagan's leadership. Also, "Reality TV" IS non-Union TV. Newsflash: we are getting more reality TV and not less. They aren't SAG-AFTRA.

As for sports? NASCAR is unbelievably successful and they don't have a "Player's Association". MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL all need to see life without PAs.

I think you're wrong in your statements about entitlement. We are fighting to keep what we have always HAD. And just because non union companies have never offered such benefits and wages to their employees does not make us wrong for wanting to keep ours. That's not entitlement.

I work hard everyday and I'm a union member.... Some union members don't. Same with the non union employees.... Some guys bust their ass.....some guys are lazy...

Most people aren't born "union haters". If there is such a thing it's probably because of the way so many of them act (this board is a great example).

And it doesn't help that they seem to think they are entitled to better benefits than the rest of the world. Entitlement does tend to annoy people who actually have to work hard to keep their job.
