Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

You would think people, the total compensation package of $130k, wouldn't be so easy to lead around by the nose.

Bernie says jump, and they jump. Giving up their paychecks so Bernie can get free airtime ahead of the primary in New York. Mean Old Verizon wants to lock your pension at 30 years? Most workers in the US don't even get a pension anymore.

Whether the 401(k) was originally meant to be a supplement is irrelevant in today's world with matched contributions. Yeah in the past you could put a few % into the plan and it would grow to help out. In today's world, you put in 6% and the company puts in 6%. 12% of salary per year for half price. Plus you can put in even more yourself. For 10% of your pre-tax salary, you can sock away 16% of salary each year. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to see the growth potential over a 25-30 yr career. And there is no cap if you work longer. No problem if you work less. It's your money.

Once again we have to listen to a non-union settler cry "I don't get that so HE shouldn't either!" What is this nursery school and I got a lollipop that you didn't? Grow up.

WHAT package???In December of 2015 VZ laid off their BEST employees (those with yrs of service) and kept the people who were new. The laid off people had benefits (good ones) which they lost, they received NO severance, NO bonuses (which had already been earned). 12/16 so many were laid off, the ones who would receive these perks only if they were with the company on 12/31/15. The higher ups pocketed that $$$. At that time we realized that the Unions would make a comeback because big business only supports the 1%.

Lovely. 401k's were meant to be a supplement for pensions, not a substitute. Another bottom feeder making excuses for the 1%. See you in about 10 years when we'll take another look at that statement. Most likely, it will read: Most workers in the US don't even get a (insert_benefit_here) anymore. Don't like not having a pension? Do something about it.

I'm so sick of the "if I can't have it no one can" mentality! Why shouldn't we have good health care? Why shouldn't we have good pay? Why shouldn't we have a retirement plan? People are pissed at us for having a good job with benefits! Why? This strike isn't about making more of anything it's about drawing the line in the sand and saying" the rich can't have everything" if anyone has any issues with there employer they should have a voice to try to make it right! If your employer decided tomorrow to cut your pay and benefits after record profits you'd be pissed too! What would you do? You'd either quit of just keep your mouth shut and bitch to your co-workers. We as union members don't have keep our mouths shut we can stand up and fight for our jobs and quality of life.

Maybe it is not that the Unions jobs have gotten better, maybe it is that non-union jobs have gotten worse? So who are you guys mad at?

The unions are still needed. VZ would hammer the union labor without it.

That being said, they also ask for too much, and protect bad workers.

This is exactly what is supposed to happen, it will work itself out in the fullness of time.

Wireline is dying, and VZ is greedy.

I couldn't believe it when I read that the unions are mad about their PENSIONS being capped at 30 years when most US workers don't even get pensions!! And then to find out that these union people get both pensions AND 401k plans? Amazing -- and that's not good enough for the unions?

Then to find out their other big complaint is that the company is asking them to contribute more to their healthcare costs just shocked me. EVERYONE has to contribute to their health costs yet these union people think they shouldn't have to? (and from what I've read, Verizon has some of the best healthcare benefits available).

It's unbelievable to me that these union people think they are ENTITLED to better benefits than 99% of the rest of us get. Utterly amazing.

If most wirkers stood up to corporations then there would not be such a disparity of wealth. Look what CEOs make compared to their workers. And why don't workers get pension anymore, because of greedy corporations.

Maybe the most workers in the US talked about should also fight back, what;s next most workers don't get breaks, vacation time, healthcare, paid for what they work, wake up America.
