Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Bad for the US... ComputerWorld revealed that the top 10 users of H-1B visas last year were all offshore outsourcing firms Tata and Infosys

Companies providing services and making a profit in the US should provide jobs in the US. Otherwise no one in the US is going to care if you go under, actually just the opposite.

If you're looking for congress to help, please consider the only thing both parties agree on is how to ship your jobs overseas. They agree of "free trade" pacts. That's about it. Before calling on congress to do something, please consider who the congress is. If you want to use them as a tool to level the playing field, you can't vote for candidates who represent the interests of board members.

The enemy isn't in congress or in India. The enemy is in the board room. When the executive committee waives x% savings through outsourcing, the greedy little bastards begin to drool, they begin to lust, they begin to plot about how they'll spend your salary.

This is an expensive cycle/lesson for most companies. My brother in law works at Target and they are currently working to bring IT back in house after outsourcing for a few years. They have new leadership at Target and that is what it will also take at Follett.

"This isn't a question about the quality of code or skills, strictly money". They are losing money with this methodology, lots of it, in failed projects and rework. So the equation for savings is not happening here and many other companies.

The pressure is on for US laws to change. Lawsuits and large numbers of citizens communicating to their representatives is changing the tide.

Unfortunately, the only way these foreign firms can undercut competitors and make money is through the H1B visa program. Follett is removing employees making standard IT salaries and replacing them with H1B paying 60k. This isn't a question about the quality of code or skills, strictly money. These H1B workers eventually earn residency and then can get jobs at the prevailing IT market rates.
