Thread regarding Detour Gold Corporation layoffs

Detour Gold....a monster in disguise????

How wonderful of YET ANOTHER big company that walks in, makes big promises, and lays off local employees over the phone while it rehires individuals from across the province through brokers at much lower wages.......Why not offer those employees you dismissed "without cause" the opportunity you grant those from as far as Thunder Bay . Cochrane employees you dismissed were helping the local economy, Those from North Bay, Thunder Bay etc. spend their monies in their home towns. And where do our MPs and MPPs sit on this issue???????? Our cost of living is very high up here. How are these men to find employment with our local industry jobs either non-existent or closed down??? What ever prompted your management to commit such an ill-devised scheme?? shame on you. I hope you reimburse the employee from Kap /Hearst area who showed up in Cochrane for his bus trip to Detour only to be denied access to the bus as "he was no longer an employee".He had to take a taxi home probably at a cost of several hundred dollars. Detour is a mound of excrement!!

I had perfect attendance and am denied entrance into the draw because you have to be an active employee at draw time. I could think of other people in my department that would have been let go before i should have been. I did my job and thought i was good at it. Still wondering why and seem to think I did not kiss the right asses or the language i speak or colour of my skin. Terminated without cause is exactly that and and i will never know exactly why i guess.

I understand your point that jobs in the area are few and far between but I don't think it's fair to suggest that Detour can't layoff employees because of market conditions or lack of alternative jobs in the market. If people thought their jobs were guaranteed because of market conditions then they likely wouldn't take their job as seriously and from what I hear rumoured is that many of the employees laid off were those with attendance issues - could be related? Detour must have had a reason to layoff so many employees at once and while unfortunate for the people affected we have to remember that it's a company. As a company they are thinking from an economical standpoint only. If they have the opportunity to save money then they'll do it. But yes, it sucks for those that don't have jobs anymore.
