Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

I keep seeing comments that the NYC office is going to close. Is that true???!!!

I have a family here and cannot easily relocate, even to buffalo (let's be honest, who wants to go there?). Is there any truth to this? It's bleak in our office but I want to hold out hope. Please tell me honestly if you think we are closing. I'm a mom of two and I need the income to keep my family afloat.

NY has lost it's usefulness. Hit is moving to Cali and the licensing portion for the remaining brands are soon to follow. From what I hear the company is trying to get out of the lease.

I can only imagine the revisions and poor decision making marketing made when it came to the packaging. Too much communication? not enough? MAKE THE LOGO BIGGER! Pathetic.

Hello Barbie isn't doing much better. Sales rank on Amazon is laughable, and the reviews are mercilessly true - WiFi sucks unless you're right near a wifi source, and it doesn't work well. Packaging looks horrible and doesn't explain what the doll does (kind of a key job for packaging). Mattel can't get out of their own way when it comes to technology - this thing is so far behind other top holiday toys even after Cyber Monday it's not funny. So much for this doll saving Mattel this year...

At least chucky was cool. This? not so much.

The point is that just because you put a phone in a stuffed animal doesn't score you innovation points. Why the F would a parent get that? My kid has an iPad for that. Congrats you just made the millennial version of chucky.

The big head bear is already on discount and who really cares what the OS is? It's not a hit.

The NYC office is no longer the necessity it once was. For years Neil kept it open because of our licensing partners being in the area (SW, Nick, etc…) but since our licensors have been dwindling, and NY really isn't the hub of the toy industry anymore (most have moved out west), the likelihood of there being massive reductions and a possible closure is a strong possibility. The hit office was closed, and it's not as if the hit properties couldn't be produced in california and since one of the VP's of hit is a cali native and misses his boy toy I'm sure there's a push to move the business. Nick? They're in the dumps as well. What else is there that couldn't be handled on the west coast?

"bluebee pals" are just a bluetooth speakers. The Smart Bear is a full Android system. I'm not saying it's the perfect toy, but if you are going to try to take swipes at products, at least you should at least know what you are talking about.

Putting a smart phone in a plush is an idea you stole from bluebee pals. Hardly innovative FP. FAIL

Obviously the last post was from someone who "thinks" they are a top performer and as usual has been overlooked because of their lack of social skills. Therefore labeling everyone else that moves past him as part of the akc.

If the office was going to close there's nothing anyone can do. If you do not feel secure you should start polishing up your resume. Better to find a job while you have a job. No one is guaranteed a job in this market and the numbers just don't look that rosy for the company this quarter. Good luck.

"If you are a top performer they will find a place for you." Uh, no. If you are part of the AKC, yes, you will have a job. If not, get busy looking as your talent won't matter.

The NYC office won't close. The company needs a presence in Manhattan. But it's fair to assume that headcount will steadily decline there. As always, if you're wondering whether you should be worried about getting laid of: you should be. If you're a top performer they will find a place for you.

Yes. Closing. Start looking. ASAP.

And all of the nonsense about East Aurora is coming from the ignorant few who write on this site. EA used to have the best products in the industry until Mattel sent their people in to make changes. Translation: completely ruin a company because they didn't do enough damage on the West Coast. And let's face it. The products that have come out of ES over the past few decades have been an embarrassment in terms of quality and play value. All in all don't write about a topic you know little to nothing about. im guessing you aren't so great at your jobs either or you would have found a new one by now.

There are a few places left in NYC, you just have to search them out. I would advise against EA as well with all of their drug use and inbreeding it's no wonder their products look so hard assed. The standing oddball smart toy for babies? The big head bear, panda, and the EDM robot? They should shuttle the staff at the campus on those short yellow school buses. The whole god damned upstate portion of NY is like one giant special ed class.

It's sad, but so true that most of the people who have been let go (including myself) have been in the same situation.
