Business goes on. Events with clients are pretty normal.
The problem is you are cutting costs by eliminating employees, and then having an excessive celebration. INAPPROPRIATE
I heard about the big Stanford party. Apparently it was to honor the Stanford Bookstore Director for doing such a good job. I don't see why anyone would have a problem with that.

What do you mean by "party"? I often go out for drinks with my co-workers after work, but it's not like we "party" during work.
