Private College

I have a kid starting at a private University this year where tuition is 50k+. Any thoughts on how to maintain this if I am laid off? I am the only provider for our family.

Move to Socialist Europe. Free college for all there. Here we don't want to pay for college, so we just import college grads on H1B and other Visas.

If you can afford $50k per year for tuition then you are way overpaid.

@ 146617: If you don't have an income, how long do you seriously think the mistress will stick around? Buy the mistress a lovely parting gift: I'd recommend a padded bra with "frownie faces" :-( on each cup, for that personal touch. Have it gift wrapped.

Tell the kid they are on their own if they want a $50K school. California State run junior colleges are about $2K per year. Then transfer to Calif State University for about $18K?? per year for last 2 years.

I paid for my mistress to get a boob job in 2 days. With me being laid off by Qcom, should I try to convince her to cancel this procedure? Also, my wife may find out, but she has cancer, so I am hoping she dies soon.

Op I don't think some of these morons understand the seriousness hence the BS comments. Student loan is easy. There are federal student loans too. Need to pay them off after the school is done. May be your kid can pay it off. Time for kid to take some responsibility.

Like all smart Americans, you must have a fully funded college fund for your kid. Just continue to tap that. You can downside your home to something in the east county while your kid finishes that liberal arts degree.

But seriously.... Contact the financial aid dept. at the high end private school and explain the situation. Financial aid is generally determined each year around March for the next school year. But most private schools realize sh*t happens--like job losses, divorces, deaths--that cause an increased need for financial aid for many students. If that's not enough, you and the kid will have to sit down and have a serious talk. S/he may have to take a part-time job to make up the gap, or take a year off. Alternatively, s/he could enroll in a state school for a couple of semesters and take all of those non-essential subjects for the major that the school requires, then transfer the credits back for the final year and graduation. Check with the records office to see if this is possible.

Have your kid apply for financial aid.
