Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Friend surplused but Company hired newbie with no apparent job skills in C&E.

I do not understand HR or the hiring managers not pulling from the surplus pool. Here you have individuals screened, experienced, with a lot of training dollars embedded in them and you disregard them and hire someone without any background whatsoever. It is a shame that internally someone is dropping the ball or just a callous maneuver to rid the Company of vested employees.

So, I uh...I volunteered to be laid off because I knew an older employee in my group was going to get laid off. I had to really fight to go up the chain of command, especially since I knew I made about 30K/year less, but I also knew I could find a job outside the company much faster. But yeah, they're absolutely laying off the more experienced workers first.

AT&T executives feel that they can decide the rules on "blacklisting employees" by tagging a "not fit" status next to their social security numbers in the system etemp that all their contractors use to place people in jobs. The reason why the "not fit"status is put in has NOTHING to do with skills. It has to do with the fact that these people took certain downsizing packages such as VRIP and CIC. What AT&T is doing is age discrimination since the average people who were downsized with these packages are older than the average person who applies for a job in AT&T. Then what happens is a person who was forced out with one of these packages can not get even a contracting job in Telecom if AT&T is engaged in the business. This closes off the careers of many older and seasoned Telecom professionals since AT&T has a much greater presence in Telecom than any other company. This appears to be illegal and down right inhumane to do to people who spent a life time building up skills in Telecom.

Frankly, it’s taken us a long time to get to this point. We’ve taken a few missteps and employee confidence was shaken. However, we’re moving in the wrong direction For a while, our team was bogged down in negativity, some will continue to come to work passionate and positive. To those of you reading these reviews, I wish you luck.

When they tell you to share your knowledge, you are giving your job away, ATT had an employee of a giant outsourcing company in India, studied and recorded my IT project manager's team, every keystroke, taking screen shots of her computer and detailed notes on how to do his work

“She just pulled up a chair in front of his computer, I had worked for the company for more than 15 years. “She shadowed him everywhere"

By late June, eight workers from the outsourcing company, had produced intricate manuals for the jobs of 67 people, mainly in IT, They then returned to India to train TCS workers to take over and perform those jobs there. The ATT employees in New Jersey, many of whom had been at the company more than a decade, were laid off.

If I hear any more about skills pivot i'm gonna puke, What do they think we're all stupid. They talk outta both sides of their mouth too the have an ERG/ Employee Resource Group for employees aged 50 and over!! Oh yea they value our wisdom. I knew back in Jan 05 when they stated SBC was taking us over that AT&T as I knew it was done. Its a matter of time.

11 friends of mine have lost their jobs this year under the pretense of a reorganization or been told that their positions were being eliminated, after they were gone, management replaced them with people from another units, no experience ( incredible) , they were extremely accomplished professionals in their 50s. Is this the latest way companies are getting rid of older workers?

AT&T is doing all it can to save money without regard to quality. AT&T leadership at least in ATO, thinks of people as widgets. They want to be able to take anyone of the street and place them into any operation environment at lower cost. Unfortunately this is not working. We are seeing things breaking beyond repair, unfortunately AT&T's leadership does not fully understand that. It is like the leadership is in shock.

To make things worse, TechMahindra that AT&T hired to replace AT&T employees by outsourcing through lower costs is not able to keep up with production support and they are also beginning to let their people go in order to adhere to the agreed upon cost of the out sourcing projects.

I have no idea what will happen next year and the years beyond.

Getting rid of older workers, for newbies with much lower salaries, ATT does not require experience anymore, no doubt!
