Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Anxiety, not enough, right amount, or too much?

Im a PSG19 and joined the company a little over two years ago. I initially got placed in PRC and my first 7 months weren't ideal, I won't bore you with the details but me and my manager didn't get along to say the least. I was just there long enough to get ranked and I got a 2-. I worked my ass off during 2014 and was able to get a 2+ the subsequent year. I just got my second horizon's rotation onto a GOM project that looks to be on track to reaching FID. How worried should I be, I know this post is highly specific, but my anxiety is making it hard to function on a day to day basis.

If your boss's nose is brown then you are fairly safe. But still, I recommend caution. Trust no one. Polish up your resume and start posting outside CVX. 2+ means nothing to management.

John Watson makes $32 million a year come Hell or high water. Do you understand how insignificant you are to him?

Horizons people are economical, usually 19-21 PSGs. You may be safe for the next month. This is Chevron's way, to design complex ROMs to hide the fact that they are targeting older employees on "performance" rather than face scores of lawsuits for EEOC Title VII discrimination.

You did your best. Chevron is not the company promoted in advertising campaigns. Your career will be filled with rank and yank judgements by the good old boy and gal Enron system. Learn as much as you can and stick it out for five years if you can.

Good luck in the ROM...it's going to be a way of life from now on as long as you stay with CVX, so please find ways to manage your stress NOW.

That's the big thing everyone I think is missing. 20-25% cut in the next few months with no fall PDC. Then another round, Then another round. My God we will dye of stress. Is today the day I am going to the chair to be electrocuted lol. I will say this, It was brought up that with such a long horizon of layoffs that many times your best leave....why? Because they can! Why deal with the stress. The answer was LET THEM GO WE ARE CHEVRO WE ALWAYS GET THE BEST AND ARE THE BEST. I wanted a kilo of whatever these F***s are snorting. As a young adult I would never ever stay in this environment. I had to much confidence ion my abilities and did not tolerate assholes. Let alone the amount of stress up ahead!

My boss told me people with under 3 years experience will not be included in the exercise. At least that's how it will go in his group I guess. I'm almost up to 5 years now so... Anonymous115038, how is it discriminatory to include all employees in the exercise? Is there something special about us horizons people to which I'm not privy?

I agree with the author of horizons folks also being up for review. There are a lot of hard workers in that crowd, but just like every other group in the company, there are slackers. If we're doing a ROM then let's just review everyone and get cleaned up. If they've been at the company long enough to have documented poor performance relative to their peers then let them go. If they've barely been here a couple years they should probably get a pass - it's kind of hard to pass judgement.

It is just depends what time frame for structure reorg you are talking about. If you are talking about surviving the one coming up next weeks then you might be OK, but if there are more reviews (as apparently already planned), then the story might be different. Remember, this process is just starting and is scheduled to last at least for the next 3 years (Project Alfa), so it is naive to think about it just as a single hurdle. It is also naive, to use a nice word, to express publicly that just because someone is a Horizon needs to be put in the chop block. Comments like this are short-sighted, discriminatory, and demonstrate a lot of ignorance from his/her author; precisely about the same reasons the company situation has slowly turned into what it is today. For some reason, some colleagues feel the need to make their point of views derogatory, and aggressive, as if they are entitled to do so, or feel they will be safer than the rest. The truth is no one w/o the right contacts and connections is safe, even if it has lingered in the company since high school, because that does not matter. We are all on this so at least be nice to others.

If you've got a row of 2-'s then you're done. You might as well leave now.

I've heard conflicting rumors on whether or not Horizons ppl are "safe". My opinion is they should be on the block too.

so, now you are quoting Warson as a verifiable source of reliable information? Honey, you must be a Chevron lifer because the brain rot is obvious.

I would agree on the Horizons program. As broke as it is (No mentoring or mission) Chevron in general will keep the people in it.

In prior re-orgs they usually don't lay off people in development programs like Horizons unless you're a poor performer. They just hire fewer people into the programs until things pick up again. Since you got a 2+, you should have nothing to worry about. In addition, Watson has said repeatedly that we're going to continue to develop people and bring in new college hires through this down cycle.

Doesn't matter. Only thing that matters is if you boss is going to fight to keep you or find you an alternative job.
