Do we know any details of this plan - I heard that it'll be 'non-customer facing' positions, whatever that means. What else do we know.

I have heard that by 2020 they either only want 60% or 40% of the managers here by that time. We heard in a group meeting once that the 3rd level said it was more like 40% should still be here in management. But who knows what big corporations are thinking but I am planning on being gone by 2020. I do feel they want to make most of us contractors to get rid of benefits. I'm lucky that being in Silicon Valley there is so much demand and money in data circuits, and that I really only work with the big dot com's. Best of luck to all of you out there.
They're playing it pretty close to the vest. My guess is all teams that just do stuff like data entry, like the team I'm on, will be eliminated when their tasks are automated. I am a programmer and have had many, many battles with management trying to automate all the mindless stuff we do. Management is pretty stupid, though, and only wants us doing tasks they understand.
Your numbers are different from what I heard. I heard 80,000 over the next 4.5 years. I also heard the bulk of those would be in ATO. I can't really say how reliable my source is on that information though.
"Non customer facing" means any employee who doesn't deal directly with AT&T's customers. Basically everyone except sales, customer service, and field technicians.
