That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard, and it came from an "outsourced" IT guy. Figures, now you know why our IT support sucks so bad.

The only thing a IP address could tell them would be a very vague (within + or - 20 miles) location of a computer. Beyond that, things like the name of the person using that computer or their address, an IP address won't tell you those things.
OP is clearly just trying to scare people way from using this site.
Not very likely IT is so understaffed as is... And if they do something like that it would be proof of how desperate the situation is !!!
