@95774: COBRA isn't limited to part of the employee severance package. If your employer provides health coverage through an ERISA Plan, you are automatically entitled to continuation coverage of the Plan through COBRA, provided you are a qualified employee. (Usually, employed for the min. period of time; not terminated for doing something like committing a crime, intentional tort; etc.) It's NOT FREE! You pay for it. And it isn't cheap. You can get other insurance. (Platinum, Gold, Silver, corroded steel....) But not having health insurance coverage after termination will usually make it more expensive to obtain future coverage, and will subject you to tax penalties. Read your Plan Description for the Notice and details. HR should have the current application forms.

This is part of the package that QC offers. Dont f*** with that. There are much better ways to save money...Like not offer 100 million to the the 2 top execs.....just saying.....

For what I been reading here, the guys layoff last fall got 3 months salary plus 1 month/year they serve at Q, and yeah the cobra thing as well. Is that consider the industry standard layoff godie bag? Sorry for asking but never got layoff before from my two previous jobs (I handed them the pinkie with a thank you note )

Relax. Mass layoff without industry standard severance package would be just asking for a class action lawsuit. That'll be far more expensive that giving some bread crumbs for the departing servitude's. Q already learned that from their Ericsson mistake. I hope.

Most of you nouveau riche or quasi-nouveau riche or wanna-be nouveau riche plebes have not worked for anyone but the Q. At most, maybe one other company. Learn from this experience and be prepared to move on with your lives the best you can (whether you stay until the bitter end or not).

Yours truly,

Obi-won anon.

@95550, "no compensation packages", are you serious about you heard that? Man, I am working my a$$ out just so I don't get into PIP. I am not even taking vacation time. If there is no package for the biggie , remaining here is not worth it. Better move on now! I know a couple guys that already move to MTK right here in SD. One got promoted, the other guy got a rise. Is a time race from now on.

SM "...let's do this fast and comprehensive... ". The only way to do it fast is to cut depts,, not down-sampling from each group. Yes they will be calling the whole dept with its VP and let them go. I also heard that there will be no packages; yes whoever got laid off in January won!!!!

Sure! Why not? Think of the cost savings when, in less than two years, your employees will be reduced to a few hundred lawyers and MBAs, and the rest younger, less experienced H1B hires, who believe that if they work 80 hrs. per week they'll automatically get a green card! If you think the 810 chip was a debacle, imagine what things will be like on the 820, as directors and managers are too busy sucking up to VPs and Exec. Dirs., or Balkanizing the company decision-making hierarchy to impede other departments' progress, so the blame for late products, shoddy code, and general "crapware" production gets shifted to someone else's department. (God forbid someone else should get bigger bonuses or more RSUs than their department.) Of course this may finally answer the question: How many "patent whores" will fit on the brass plaques on the "Wall of Suck-ups...."

Good option for San Diego employees who have access to the affordable health services in neighboring Tijuana, at the other side of the fence that divides the drug consuming society from the drug producers and providers.
