Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Where do we go? Options?

I know there's life after Chevron but where do you have suggestions? I'm still employed but the oil and gas market is so bad right now. I don't want to jump and get laid off somewhere else, a layoff here would be better. please, do you have suggestions on companies hiring who are not in deep sh--? I don't want to take a so called good opportunity that's temp work either.

Grow Up had the best advice. Chevron is not the only game in town. At this point you may as well wait for your 4 + 1 payout. The end is near for 25%. You should start looking, but hold out for the payout. One thing to know, Chevron does not have the great reputation you believe. You have been brainwashed. Chevron is a lot like Enron.

Leave oil and gas if you have general engineering or project experience. Pay is very comparable. I left for a Project management job in construction. Also if you have field experience you will find work in oil and gas. What I mean by that is managing work on a pad or platform. Not Chevron bull shit but truly running a rig, frac crew, flow back, CPU's. Companies need experienced field managers. LinkedIn is how you get jobs today and networking.

I had exactly 5 years with Chevron and could not do it anymore. The total lack of leadership and horrible behaviors forced me out last fall. I found this web page googling layoffs Chevron to see where they were cutting.

Do you really want to stay there? Sheesh it sucked!

Some of you missed the point. The poster is not saying that there's no other company out there, what he's probably worried about is jumping ship and getting canned somewhere else. Possibly somewhere you won't get some severance if you don't have much time in.

For God Sakes People, Chevron isn't the only company the world. the perks are good, but the management and leadership are clueless. A bunch of high potential leaders that have zero experience, just got promoted because they are high potential not because the have a business acumen

Be realistic. Every energy related company in the country is taking advantage of the downturn in crude prices to "winnow the ranks". CVX, just during my career, has cycled through boom/bust, at least 3 times, this is just the latest. The entire industry, upstream, midstream, and downstream, is in flux. The common thread, the most obvious means of insuring survival? Cut costs. Labor costs. Enjoy.

The modern 4+1. Get down on all fours and they'll give you one.

Anon 108882 - Anyone saying 4+1 is probably engaging in wishful thinking. I (long term ETC) might be one of those old guys some posters have ranted about who would likely have been approached with an enhanced severance offer to get me to volunteer to fall on my sword for the greater good - if it existed. The 4 means add 4 years to age and / or years of service for retirement calculations and the 1 means 1 month pay per year of service instead of standard 2 weeks. These were common in 1980's and early 1990's layoffs, but I haven't heard of such things in years. Believe it when you hear it officially. As far as a "list" goes, I imagine that by this point, the broad outlines of what areas are most likely to be cut heavily and which areas are safer are probably set and perhaps even some people identified. But these are drafts subject to change up to the drb. After that, they will probably approach possible volunteers. Until that's done, there is no final list. And it's appropriate for management to keep their collective mouths shut until there is. You want damage to an organization, start spouting off about who might be laid off, by name, prior to the axe falling.

Chevron pays pretty well and has great perks and that helps retain staff... the problem is that the longer you work for them the more useless you become in the 'real world'. There are too many made up processes and bogus procedures that people randomly invent to keep employed because their real world skill-set has been stripped away from them and is no longer applicable.

what is 4+1 plan mentioned by someone above? also how do you guys know that the list has already been decided?

What I struggle with is that I'm both in a support role but one that is necessary. However, they probably don't need as many of us as before, so I have no idea where I stand! Management won't talk. Instead they all lie like they know nothing. Yet they have a list already from HR and they've all signed non-disclosure agreements.

Worst case scenario you get the 4+1 plan

Seriously? It's well understood 20-30% reduction in all support groups. If you're a high paid grade you're a target. If you have bad ratings you're a target. If you're in a group or job that no one needs you're a target. Base business in the support groups will be left alone.

what is most riskiest in ETC? fresh engineer out of school such as those on Horizon program? very experienced hires (25+ years) hired from other peer companies (Exxon, Shell, BP, etc.)? or those that are struggling to find projects to do?

During my 25 + year career as a geoscientist, I've been laid off twice, fired once, and quit 4 times. I will survive!

So sorry to hear that. Once they tell you, what's the timeline here for employees? They don't walk you out the door the same day like they do at other companies, do they? Been through that humiliation once!

We're not all newbies just because we have under 5 yrs with Chevron. Some of us are experienced hires from other companies that weren't doing well.

The only young (less than five years) employees that need to worry are those with poor work ethic.

jobsearch 101: update your LinkedIn profile, dust off your contacts, look at jobs that were not good enough for you before, call your professors and do it before everyone else at Chevron is on the street. That's what I did, and I have a job that pays more. Just do it before the Chevron employee fire sale.

I couldn't agree with you more, although I believe the original intent of this message is to address those of us who have under 5 years and are actually capable and have worked in other places. any suggestions?

Long term Chevron employees: this is a problem YOU will need to fix. Uncle Daddy Chevron won't help with this. But from the looks of these responses, you expect this to be the old normal, where Chevron bails you out or sends you somewhere else. Get off your butts and figure out your next moves.

Not this time.

I guess Chevron is the pinnacle judging by the lack of responses. Guess when you're laid off here you don't find gainful employment that's comparable to Chevron.
