Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

How to you tell someone the bad news?

How to you tell someone who has just been accepted by the University of Phoenix that they have likely made one of the worst life choices they could make?................. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/college-choice-rational-dahn-shaulis?trk=mp-author-card

Anonymous108218 -- I'm not sure what qualifies you to make absolute conclusions based simply on observation. Why don't you go start a GO FUND ME research account and see if you can fundraise enough funds to take single courses at several schools (traditional, non-traditional, private, public,etc.). Write down your observations from moment of first contact with a school representative to the day you finish with the course or two at each institution. Compare apples to apples. Meaning compare maybe UOP, Kaplan, Devry, AIU with someone like ASU or a CSUF, CS school and the like. Create an analysis of your experiences with actual support staff, faculty, course content, instructor feedback and such. Take exact subjects if possible to give the public comparable data. Don't just say....DO, once you have enough data then draw up conclusions.

@OMG--you can doubt all you like, but having read papers and other forms of written communication myself from these for-profit students and graduates, I am certain they are being pushed through absent any critical-thinking skills and writing acumen. Shill as you will, but UOP is a deceptive swindle on students and taxpayers. It's only a matter of time before your enrollment is under 100K for market pressures and increased government regulation. You're finished.

MathConfusion -- I'm not sure if this math includes just profits or revenues minus operating expenses. Plus this calculation is probably not taken into consideration those who start, drop and perhaps start back or take credits elsewhere and graduate. I'm sure $4 billion was also at the height of their growth and not a constant revenue stream since when the university became accredited in 1978. Again, I'm not arguing that the university (along with many others, including non proprietary, not for profit traditional schools) need to focus on the affordability of a college education. However, the financial responbilities should lie on government regulations on how money is borrowed and how much is borrowed, universities should ensure healthy profit margins but not extreme and employers should also adopt tuition reimbursement policies if they expect to employ degreed candidates. Even traditional schools should be considered when it comes to "profits" and determine what is considered a healthy administrators salary. Just because they're labeled "non profit doesn't mean they don't profit. Take a look at how many "charity" companies label themselves as non profit but when you look at how much they actually spend on research for a cause, the percentages are in the single digits. Same concept and all of it needs to be fixed!

OMG,

How does UoP collect 4 billion a year but has graduated only 1 million students? That's 1,000,000 students/38 years=26,315 students per year. Did these alum really pay an average of 150,000.00 each for their UoP degrees?

@Anonymous108017 -- I really doubt anyone would have gone through a program without receiving any constructive feedback when most class sizes in a proprietary institutions are of about 10-20 students. Plus you must have gone to a brick and mortar school where there are auditorium sized classes and experienced instructors who were not only capable of providing 100% feedback to their 1000+ weekly students and deliver a rigorous academia at the same time. Who are we kidding?? God like super powered instructors have been created by the non proprietary university. Right? Must explain their six figure income. God bless America. Someone pass me the popcorn please!

@OMG--you are deluded if you think that UOP isn't a diploma mill. These credentials are not widely recognized, and most certainly bought. I once had an undergrad at UOP tell me she had received an A on a paper, but when I asked her why she earned an A, this student told me that this instructor had not given her any feedback. She went on to tell me she rarely received any constructive feedback from any instructors at this phony school. There's no learning going on here.

Camden Kid is playing the system. He short sells higher ed stocks while posting negative comments about higher ed institutions that are structured to pay taxes. To the question below, that is how he makes his money.

Congratulation cards were simply a nice gesture to congratulate students on their decision to start a new journey. I'm sure that the vast majority of UOP's nearly 1 million Alumni don't feel as if they "bought," but instead know they worked hard to EARN their degree! There will always be flaws in the system but.... "Don't find fault, find a remedy." - Henry Ford

Managers in SD used to encourage enrollment advisors to send congratulatory cards to new students. Congratulations on being 'admitted' to our non selective school. LMFBO. The degrees from this joke school are bought and never earned.
