Google is #1, topping the list of America's best companies to work for. Again! Also on the list: Cisco, numerous smaller tech companies, several banking firms, insurance companies, at least 5 (count 'em dudes!) law firms, and the "Whole Paycheck" Markets. Noticeably absent: Qualcomm. Which shows that even firms that insist their employees wear suits and ties while slaving in their cube farms for 80+ hour work weeks, or whose "industrial" and ink-bedecked employees who stock shelves for slightly more than minimum wage feel they have it better than the "best and the brightest" at Qualcomm. What do they have that you don't?

the truly loyal remain blind to the world outside of the bubble you have created for them. they are ripe to be exploited. Just throw that loyal "dog" a bone every 6 months or so.

Well, dogs don’t think like humans, and the last thing they do is abandon their master. Call it stupidity, call it loyalty, it is a trait that humans rarely possess these days. You should not expect loyalty, but when you find someone who is truly loyal to you, you do everything you could to repay him back. It will make you better person, if that has any value.
if the dog had any sense it would find a better offer. (i.e. new owner). that's why loyalty is just a sham, when it's really a quid pro quo, so long as long as you got the quid
That hits the mark, “loyal dog will starve to death.” That is why a man’s best friend is a dog and not another man or woman. No one else will be there to help left you up when you fall, but a dog will stay by your side until you get back up. Yes, the dog will starve to death if you cannot work any more. Anyone with humility would feed the dog before he fed himself. What good is civilization with art and culture, when the gut of the society is empty without any value, or with only capitalistic value. Sounds all good, until you or your family is on receiving end. You know then who is your friend.
yes that's correct. if you stop working, you should expect a rational company to fire you. if a company stops paying you, a rational employee would seek work elsewhere. that's the extent of the loyalty. it's a company not a family. no need to get sentimental. dogs are supposedly loyal. see what happens if you stop feeding it. the loyal dog will starve to death.
If it is all about exchange of work for money, then getting laid off means the company no longer needs your service and you should not expect any compensation. What if QC lay off everyone that is not needed. How many needs to go?
Correct. Employee should ONLY act in their own best interest, not be grateful for opportunity or be deluded by notions of mutual loyalty. Grateful for what? It's an exchange of work for money. There are no favors being done here, no free lunches.
@ IlikeQualcomm: I don't work for Qualcomm. Never did. Even so, the concept of loyalty to the corporation for giving you an "opportunity" to support your family, etc. died sometime in the early 1980's--about the same time "greed became good." Of course you probably weren't born then; and movies tend to lose something in translation. But gloating never loses its appeal....
QC down turn has already started. QC stock is down over 15% from the peak in 2014, and it is down 7% YTD. It is clear what investors think. Employees can ignore that, but if you depend on bonuses and equity grants to pay for bills, then you better take note. Rise and fall of companies are part of business, and it would be foolish to get dragged down with it.
A good chunk of the workforce has less than 6 years exp. That means they've only worked in a post Lehman easy credit bubble economy, and generally in a rising qcom stock environment. No wonder the complacency seeps in. Let's see what happens when the music stops. We are about due for Lehman part 2. Good luck!

The truth to the matter is that for a lot of you whiners, at this moment, you need qualcomm to provide you with employment more than they need you as a worker. And as long as that is the case, they can treat you like their bitch boy however they seem fit.

I started in 1999 with Q - cannot complain, I've done well. So, I could care less about Google's ranking and a ton of smaller players struggling to stay afloat.
