So why is Barnes selling 3 stores for every 1 that Follett sales and Barnes loses 1 store for every 3 that Follett loses.. Please give me the reasons.

Wrong, the secretaries report to Mr. usher and the marketing VPs have no direct reports.
Not true, they have an organization hiearchy just like other departments. Marketers, secretaries, managers, directors and VP's.
The marketing people don't have anyone under them, so how could you have worked for a marketing person?

Hope that was a Craftsman tool bag....if so he is in like flint with the new leadership at Follett.
I personally worked for one of the marketing people years ago and I can tell you that he/she is a tool bag.
I wouldn't buy a bottle of water in the desert from that fool.
Nothing signed yet though just talk.
I was invited to a presentation also years ago and the head marketing guy from Oak Brook introduced our team ( I was the regional mgr and we also had the sr. VP for ops) and when he got to us, he said, " At Follett we want to have here today, the team that would actually serve you if we were given the opportunity to be your partner". As we walked out, we passed the Barnes team that had all senior sales people. We were awarded the contract and the school contact told me that including the actual ops people at the presentation made it hard for Barnes to compete. This scene no longer happens at FHEG since we crowd the room now like Barnes with senior home office people. That is what the old marketing team bought to the market and we won more often back then. Let's return to those winning ways.
I got invited to a marketing presentation about 6-7 years ago to a customer and our team was absolutely amazing and well prepared with every detail thought out and we won the account. I don't see that happening today. Those guys were so professional--what happened?
True Deaton is still hanging around but hasn't anything to do with Marketing.
Deaton is still there and in Westbrook regularly.
Just look at the personnel. The East has an "absentee" VP. The "new" VP has no knowledge of our market and has a large learning curve to negotiate. The head of marketing is nothing more than a used car salesman but he is family after all .
Simple explanation for Marketing's woes. Leadership. No Deaton or Dowdy. Sales pros. No Flanagan and no Sullivan.
don't forget these are the guys that decided 'hassle free shopping' is in and the 'door to more' never happened. Both phrases sound like something uttered by a twit, and that's the best they could do.
