Thread regarding Heald College layoffs

Just a little confused.

Heald was purchased by CCI. So why do a lot of the posts keep referring to comments like they are 2 separate companies. Have I missed something in the buyout? I don't understand the separate coming mentality. I thought Heald and CCI were one. Just like Chevrolet owns corvette. Please explain if I am missing something. Thanks.

@020: The placement test only says whether a person needs to take remedial math and english or not. It's not a pass/fail test like the SAT/ACT. Unless the person is unable to pay for tuition, for-profit schools will NEVER turn a person away. Admissions herds people in like cattle to take their money and forces the teachers to deal with the quality.... because failing a student out of a class means that student might not come back... then there goes their money.

It's over for the Heald.

961 - at my campus, they are required to have a high school diploma/have passed GED and show proof of it. Modified diplomas are not acceptable. In addition, there is a placement test, as terrible as it is. Sorry your campus chose to go the CCi way.

No, they are no longer the minority. That might have been the case two years ago, but it isn't now. And what "admissions standards"? There aren't any. Ask students what tests or diplomas that had to show to be admitted. They're not even required to have a GED.

Yes, it's true that there are students who should not be enrolled. They are the small minority at our campus, though. If we make it past this quarter, I would hope we revisit enrollment standards.

919 is right. I've had mentally handicapped students, homeless students, students coming in from over an hour away, and when they didn't come to class, it was on my *ss. I had to call them and find out why. If students failed my class, I was told I had failed them. They weren't there to learn. They were there because "admissions" had enrolled them and we needed to keep their bodies in class, paying tuition (or having the government paying their tuition).

@911

Actually I do work there. And I see students admitted who should never be in a college. I see students who get to me and they cannot write a coherent sentence, they can't multiply 3 times 4, and they can barely read. These students were admitted just for the money they provide CCI, and they are dumped on the street when they graduate deeply in debt. That sounds like a diploma mill to me. And the one to thank is CCI.

866 Heald is not a diploma mill. Totally offensive to say. You obviously don't work there.

CCI has turned into a diploma mill. At one time Heald was an okay school, now it needs to die with CCI.

Heald is a subdivision of CCi. Ever since the acquisition, Heald has been doing things the CCi way. That goes for everything from division management, the campus presidents, right on down to the practices for classroom instructors, admonitions reps, and career placement staff. Anyone who says differently is either in denial or hasn't been paying attention. Oh, and instructors, get on the phone and do your outreach!

@805: 'Part of' doesn't mean 'are one'. Heald is an appendage of CCI. Cut off the appendage and CCI is still there. Conversely, that also means that Heald is still there but without the festering body of CCI to further infect it. CCI isn't going to just 'cut' Heald off, though. Heald's options are purchase or death with CCI. What one do you see coming?

The ruling in Sacramento should clear the way for the sale. Commission and AG can collaborate on lower sanctions to make Heald attractive to one of the suitors. Why was the head of CCI (Jack) not at this important meeting in Sacramento? MY guess is that Heald told him to stay away. You don't ask Bernie Madoff to join you when discussing a refinance with the bank.

Heald staff and faculty on the whole were dismayed to be bought by CCI in the first place.

People just refuse to acknowledge that we are a part of CCI , that's all.

Anonymous69797, replace Star Wars and Disney with Wells Fargo and Heald. The banks (in this case Wells Fargo) and hedge funds got so greedy when they tried to "capitalize" on the stream of Title IV (and GI Bill) money, that they were willing to compromise any ethics Heald and Wyotech had. Everything became cash flow.

Think of Heald more like the Star Wars franchise that went from being owned by Lucas to being owned by Disney... except that in Heald's case right now, Disney spun the franchise on its head and turned it from being an epic, sci-fi/fantasy into a Hannah Montana meets Sponge Bob mash-up. Now Disney has to try to sell it (being the last of its liquid assets) to support it's drug habit.

From a business standpoint, Heald and CCi are one. From a regional accreditation standpoint, Heald must be self governing with an independent board to meet eligibility criteria.
