Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Looks like I'm not the only one suggesting QCOM break off the chip business

It's always about shareholders, not employees. Good luck employees

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/jana-partners-urges-qualcomm-consider-044030571.html

April 13 (Reuters) - Activist investor Jana Partners is asking Qualcomm Inc to consider spinning off its chip unit from its patent-licensing business, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a quarterly letter that will be sent to Jana investors on Monday.

Jana, one of Qualcomm's largest shareholders, is also calling on the company to cut costs, accelerate stock buybacks and make changes to its executive pay structure, financial reporting and board of directors, the newspaper said. (http://on.wsj.com/1EsowPH)

Reuters could not immediately reach Jana Partners and Qualcomm for comment outside regular U.S. business hours.

90704 - Well said but I dont agree 100%.. :). Like all big companies, they cant provide the lowly working class all the info for fear of losing too many employees too early before the master plan is executed. Everyone should try their best and always have a plan B cause your right, you need to look out for #1.

Don't worry all you little workers, Q will take care of you so work really hard so that when they sell you they get the best value and more money for themselves.

Maybe the bump in stock price will offset the cost of starting over or getting laid off, and if they are feeling really generous you might even get to keep the invested options, or maybe not.

Anyway, work hard and be happy.

gosh 501 I never said companies were not in business to make money. in fact it makes perfect business sense for Qualcomm to lie to its employees about spin-offs divestitures layoffs or any other business designed to make the shareholders happy.

what I am saying is that as an employee of Qualcomm you still have a responsibility primarily to yourself and your family. just like its Qualcomm duty to the shareholders to screw you over for money you have a personal responsibility to yourself not to give Qualcomm any more than they deserve, and to have an exit strategy for when crap happens.

Where did you suggest this earlier in print, Mr. Dog-pile?

@90389, do you think people at Apple (and its shareholders) are still complaining that activist iCahn got involved? Demonizing activists is like demonizing short sellers. But yeah, RALLY and BEAT DOWN major institutional owners who speak publicly their ideas for unlocking value. Starting to think you are subversively mocking HR by playing HR cheerleader role. Genius!

90492... Get a life. You should be happy to be employed by QC (unless you got layed off). Get off the notion that you deserve better. That is a common attitude problem that most US based employees have and it needs to get fixed. Companies are in business to make money....period.

One more note, get another job and stay off this board. You are a complete MORON.

it's no rumor that stocks are flat and the executives are under pressure to increase the stock price.

It's no rumor that the Qualcomm socket market share is decreasing.

It's no rumor that the executives are under pressure to split off silicon.

it's no rumor that stocks had a micro rally based on the idea of splitting off silicone.

It's no rumor that Qualcomm executives and HR will lie to the employees, tell them what they want to hear to protect the deal and their own fat paychecks. They have done it before and will do it here as long as they can get away with it.

it's not about rumors, it's about the trajectory that Qualcomm is on. A trajectory that is pretty easy to see.

Our little HR cheerleader is betting you're stupid enough to ostrich based on their noise so it catches you with your pants down, because that works out best for QC.

You have a duty to yourself and your family to keep your eyes open and plan for what's coming.

Rallying against rumor mangers and corporate raiders, of course. Help yourself to a complimentary caffeinated beverage and open up a can of whoop tushy against our corporate foes. Come on Qualcommers I know we can do this.

Rally caps! I love that omniscient rumor killin' HR rep. He/she must've gone to the Padres game yesterday. Although rally implies being behind late in the game. HR rep is saying QC isnt leading the industry?

Don't worry, nothing will happen until late 3rd quarter at the earliest, then it will take a few years for everything to be moved overseas (except the lawyers and media people), and if you are good you'll probably survive most of the transition and have time to prepare to move somewhere else, or get a biotech degree.

They tried it 8years ago. Even the name was decided SpinCo. But didn't pan out. Thereby Sanjay Jha left as he wanted to be a ceo. Rest is history.

If qct spins off : licensing team will become like arm, licensing to everyone and chip business will die or taken over by a bigger fish like

Samsung or intel. In either scenario Qualcomm is finished.
