Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Ecstatic about any chance to avoid work

I'm looking forward to the extra few days off we'll get this week way too much. It almost feels like a lifeline. I'm trying to figure out when the work turned from a moderately enjoyable experience into a total clusterfu-k that is destroying my mental health.

When you start feeling like that OP, it’s time to start exploring other options outside of Nike. As everyone knows it’s easier to find a new job when you already have a job. So now’s the time to start looking.

Figure out what you want to do for work and where you want your career to go. Then start applying at organizations that will satisfy your needs. Don’t let inertia take ahold and stand in the way. It’s all too easy to stay in a job you no longer really like just because leaving that job might require some work and involve a little bit of risk. Your mental health will continue to suffer while some great opportunities will pass you by.

I left Nike two years ago when I was no longer enjoying the job and realized it was negatively impacting my mental health. Best decision I’ve made in many years. My only regret was letting my own inertia remain in place for years and not leaving earlier. I had been brainwashed into thinking Nike was THE place to work in the PDX area. Many years ago that might have been true. Nowadays there are a lot of companies doing cool work, paying well, providing real professional growth opportunities, and providing a more healthy work/life balance; most of which I found difficult to achieve at Nike.

I think EH will make needed improvements. But I also think Nike’s best days and consistent 8%+ annual growth are behind it. To me it would be depressing to work at a company that was once the undisputed and unflappable industry leader, that was now struggling just to generate ANY growth. Nike isn’t going away but there can be no doubt that the chip was irretrievably knocked off its shoulder. For me it was no fun to watch the company own the market for a long time, then suddenly watch it fall from its perch under poor leadership. I decided my time there was done and left. I haven’t regretted that decision even a single day since.

If you’re no longer enjoying it look at other jobs. Life is too short to wake up everyday for a job that makes you feel bad. It took me too long to both learn and then act on that knowledge. Your future will be whatever you make of it. Choose wisely.
