How Moving to Dallas Transformed My Career at AT&T

A few years ago, I made the decision to relocate to Dallas to stay in step with AT&T’s growing focus on this city as a core hub. Looking back, I can confidently say it was one of the best moves I’ve made for my career. Being in Dallas put me at the center of AT&T’s operations, giving me access to more resources, opportunities, and networking connections than ever before.

Since the move, I’ve been able to work closely with key teams, take on projects that would have been harder to access remotely, and really make a name for myself in the company. The proximity to leadership and peers in Dallas has helped me grow faster than I anticipated, and I’m constantly reminded how much this location aligns with AT&T’s strategic goals. For anyone at AT&T considering where to focus their career, I can say from experience that relocating to Dallas can open up doors that might not be available anywhere else.

You moved to Dallas to “transform”? So now you’re a “transformer”? It seems like San Francisco would have been the optimal place for such ongoings.

Upper management will continue to ignore you in the hallways and elevator, as much as they ignore you on meetings and in chat. They want you in the office so that security can observe you and make sure they find the people that keep leaking customer data. Its a witch hunt. Has nothing to do with work culture.

I'll take: Dear AskATT for $100 Alex. Please write about how I benefited from moving to Dallas and all the connections that I'll make. Try to make it convincing.

“I am moving to Dallas next spring. Do you have any relocation tips to help make things easier?”

Ok guys, shall I break the news to him gently?
Ummm. You are not moving to Dallas in the Spring. You were “invited” to follow the job with the fine print that there are no guarantees. The offer will be rescinded in due time and replaced with a layoff notice. Pssst. They were hoping you’d say no but since you didn’t, it’s time to re-evaluate.

Now. In light of the wool being lifted from your eyes, 👀 do not disrupt your family. Put a deposit on an apartment, and get an age discrimination attorney. You’re welcome.

OP has a fetish about smelling the keyboards in Dallas while attending all his meetings on MS Teams to “collaborate” with his fellow worker bees in Atlanta, NJ, Croatia and Mumbai.
Congrats OP, you finally cracked the code.

Dallas is a flat hellscape of brown and concrete. I would rather be fried in coconut oil than to live there. If you are an alcoholic, there are plenty of bars and not much else. I'm glad I'm finally positioned well enough financially that T literally has no sway over me to force me to move there.

I am glad it worked out for you. I chose not to move so that I could remain close to my family and not uproot our kids. However, I know of several people that did move and then were cut a few months after moving to Dallas and purchasing a house. Moving to Dallas does not guarantee anything with this crowd. As an employee, you are a number and if you do not fit in the total picture you will be discarded.

Wow such blatant bs. I know people that moved to Dallas to keep their jobs. You know because they wanted a couple more years before retiring kind of situation. None of them are happy with it. None of them have expressed how great it is. Quite the opposite. Sure the building is nice with some nice amenities, but that it.

LMAO! Uh, ok. Let me fix this for you.

“Moving to Dallas bankrupted me by buying a house 2x the price of my last one and 6% interest higher, as well. But on a positive note, I get to spend 2 hours in traffic, paying tolls and parking out of pocket to maybe have a min opportunity to see Stank’s PJ’s in the office. Still waiting though. He’s so busy and must take private elevators. I do get to stare awkwardly at other VP’s in the lunchroom. Best decision ever.”

Being in Dallas does give one access
to upper mgmt, more employees to connect with and probably a better sense being a part of ATT.
I moved to Dallas from another location and have never felt like having access to upper mgmt helped my career.
To me, the only real difference between Dallas and other locations is you get to see how the upper mgmt go about their days, the perks they have access to and all the wasted money the company spends on useless stuff

Please allow me to complete your fictional story with a non-fiction ending…
“And after working closely with key teams on successful projects, I received a letter informing me of the relocation of my role based on a strategic realignment of where and how we work. My job was moving to Atlanta so that I could do the same thing there as I am doing here in Dallas. I said to myself, sure. Let’s do it. AT&T has been good to me amd I have been loyal to them. Three days after informing them that I opted-in to follow the job, I received another letter informing me that upon reevaluation, I job was being terminated and I was being let go. Coincidentally, I had just celebrated my 51st Birthday and I was Caucasian. “

Welcome to reality and how your story ends. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this is likely how it ends for all of us.

Get tornado insurance. Stankey's house was less than a mile south of the tornado back in 2019.

Also, if you don't like scorpions, jumping spiders, hornets, or cockroaches, you better prepare yourself.

Being in Dallas put me at the center of AT&T’s operations

Hahaha, my friend - try living in a real city.

As someone who visits the Dallas HQ every now and then, I can tell you there's literally nothing there. Calling it a downtown is an insult to cities worldwide, because it dies when everyone goes home for the evening.

Unless you're just coping... in that case, I'm sorry.
